Arne Slot is eager to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool with the Premier League side opening talks with Feyenoord to bring him to Anfield.

The Dutchman emerged as the new front runner for the manager’s role on Merseyside this week after Liverpool missed out on Xabi Alonso, who has decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

Slot, who was pursued by Tottenham last summer, wants to join Liverpool ‘at all costs’, with the Premier League side now entering negotiations with last year’s Dutch champions.

De Telegraaf report ‘serious negotiations’ are underway between Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s newly-appointed sporting director, and Feyenoord officials who are seeking at least €10million (£8.5m) in compensation for losing their manager.

Slot would also be eager to bring his backroom staff with him to Merseyside.

The 45-year-old guided Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in six years last season and has developed a reputation for an attacking style of play and developing burgeoning young talents.

His side lifted the Dutch Cup after a 1-0 win over NEC Nijmegen on Sunday but look set to miss out on another Dutch title, trailing PSV Eindhoven by nine points.

Following last season’s title success, Slot turned down the chance to succeed Antonio Conte at Tottenham last summer, signing a new contract until 2026.

Feyenoord had hoped to keep him at the club until then but a move to Liverpool could now await.

Klopp announced his shock decision to step down as Liverpool boss in January.

Former Reds midfielder Alonso was quickly identified as a first-choice replacement but the former Spain international has committed to at least one more year in Germany after leading Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title.

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim was also thought to be under consideration. The Portuguese also held talks with West Ham United this week.

Liverpool have already secured the Carabao Cup but hopes of an unprecedented quadruple on Klopp’s farewell tour were dashed by Manchester United and Atalanta in the FA Cup and Europa League respectively.

The club are still in a three-way battle for the Premier League title and can go level on points with Arsenal at the top if they beat Everton in Wednesday’s Merseyside derby.
