Apple launches iPad Pro M4 with OLED screen and new iPad Air, says pair them with Pencil Pro

Apple on Tuesday launched four new iPads. While the iPad Air — which now comes in 11-inch and 13-inch variants — gets a faster chipset, the iPad Pro has seen a major makeover. The iPad Pro, which now comes in 11-inch size and 13-inch size, gets a new M4 chipset and a faster M4 chipset. It has also been redesigned, though it still looks kind of similar. But now it is thinner, with Apple calling the new iPad Pro its thinnest iPad yet.Â

Along with the new tablets, Apple has also refreshed the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. The Pencil, in particular, acquires some new sensors and now comes in a variant called Pencil Pro.Â

Highlighting the M4 chipset inside the new iPad Pro, Apple said that the new tablet would delight people who use it to create video and multimedia content. “The new iPad Pro with M4 is a great example of how building best-in-class custom silicon enables breakthrough products,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. “The power-efficient performance of M4, along with its new display engine, makes the thin design and game-changing display of iPad Pro possible, while fundamental improvements to the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and memory system make M4 extremely well suited for the latest applications leveraging AI. Altogether, this new chip makes iPad Pro the most powerful device of its kind.”

Although the M4 is no doubt a big upgrade, most users are going to notice the new OLED display on the iPad Pro at first glance. Apple is calling the new display Ultra XDR Display. The company says that to achieve better brightness — despite OLED limitations around brightness — the company used two OLED panels in the iPad Pro. It calls the technology Tandem OLED.Â

Also, the design changes means that the iPad Pro 13-inch is just 5.3mm thin while the iPad Pro 11-inch measures at 5.1mm. Apple also says that to better manage the performance and heat in the iPad Pro, it has added a graphene layer to it and the Apple logo is now made of copper, which too should act as a heat sink.Â

The iPad Air, meanwhile, now uses an M2 chipset. “We’re so excited to introduce the redesigned 11-inch and all-new 13-inch iPad Air, offering two sizes for the first time. With its combination of a brilliant Liquid Retina display, the phenomenal performance of the M2 chip, incredible AI capabilities, and its colourful, portable design with support for new accessories, iPad Air is more powerful and versatile than ever,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing.

In India, the new iPad Air is available in blue and purple finishes, along with starlight and space grey. The 11-inch iPad Air starts at Rs 59,900, and the 13-inch iPad Air has a price of Rs 79900. The iPad Air can be ordered in India today, whereas the deliveries and physical sale will start from May 15.Â

The iPad Pro, meanwhile, starts at a price of Rs 99,900 for the 11-inch variant. The 13-inch variant will sell at a starting price of Rs 1,49,900.Â

With new iPads, Apple is also bumping — rather doubling — their storage in the base variant. The iPad Air starts at 128GB storage while the iPad Pro starts with 256GB storage.Â

The new Magic Keyboard, which comes with Function keys and a redesigned trackpad, will sell in India at a price starting Rs 29,900.Â

The Pencil Pro, which now comes with new sensors and hence features like squeeze to select and Find My, has a price of Rs 11,900 in India.
