For Apple fans, nothing rouses excitement quite like an unveiling event.

Now the tech giant is gearing up to host its first one of the year – and it’s taking place in less than two weeks.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has posted a cryptic animated teaser for the event, which he confirmed will be streamed online on May 7.

The animation features the Apple logo being drawn in a variety of bright colours and artistic styles, including one with a hand holding a stylus.

The Apple boss also told his X followers to ‘pencil us in’, alluding to what the company has in store.

Apple’s website also features an abridged version of the animation and confirms further details about the event.

It will be streamed online on Apple TV and Apple’s website from 10am Eastern Time (3pm BST) on May 7.

Although the company hasn’t confirmed what new products will be announced, rumours are furiously circulating online.

According to Apple tipster Mark Gurman, the company is about to unveil several new iPads, including a Pro with a ‘snazzy new OLED screen’.

OLED screens – which provide better image quality – have been fitted on iPhones since 2017 but not on iPads.

This is corroborated by MacRumors, which reports that two iPad Pro models with OLED and two iPad Air models will be announced.

They would be the first new iPads since 2022 and mark the longest wait for new iPads in the company’s history.

There will also be an Apple Pencil with a squeeze gesture for certain actions and a new Magic Keyboard (Apple’s line of wireless computer keyboards), MacRumors adds.

Apple has been contacted for comment, although the tech giant is notoriously tight-lipped in the run-up to product releases.

It is said to be working on at least two new smartphones, although they’re not expected to be revealed at next month’s event.

The first – the iPhone 16 – should be unveiled towards the start of September and could feature a new ‘Capture Button’.

With a single press, the Capture Button will take photos and start video clips and will offer users an alternative to tapping away at the screen.

The second new phone will allegedly be the iPhone SE 4, the latest in Apple’s ‘budget’ SE line, expected to be released in spring 2025.

Leaked renders suggest will have a 6.1-inch display, a USB-C charging port, and a single primary camera at the back.

Shortly after May’s event is Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), from June 10-14, although this will focus on new software rather than hardware.

Apple usually has two or three product releases per year, although the one in the autumn is when the next flagship iPhone is revealed

Apple boss Tim Cook has also teased a ‘huge’ AI announcement that’s coming ‘later this year’ – possibly a product akin to ChatGPT.

Speaking on Apple’s quarterly earnings report at the start of February, he said: ‘As we look ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future.

‘That includes artificial intelligence, where we continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort.

‘We’re excited to share the details of our ongoing work in that space later this year.’

Social media mocks Apple as it scraps its autonomous electric car plans after a decade of work – as one user jokes ‘they realised it would require Windows!’

Despite spending billions of dollars on the project in the past 10 years, Apple has scrapped efforts to build its own self-driving electric car.

Social media users have been mercilessly mocking the tech giant, which is reportedly set to fire employees who worked on the ambitious scheme.

Taking to X, one joked that Apple cancelled the car ‘after realizing it would require windows’, in a nod to the software from rival tech firm Microsoft.

Another user said that the ‘charging solution proved a bit inconvenient’ with a shot of an upside-down car with a charger plugged into it.

Yet another posted an image of the ‘original Apple car’ – driven by Lowly Worm the fictional earthworm from the classic 1960s children’s books.
