Over 30 areas to undergo planned power outage in Johannesburg

Residents across more than 30 areas in Johannesburg should prepare for a power outage. A planned power outage is scheduled for this Sunday, 21 April, from 8:00 to 16:00.

Affected areas in Johannesburg

The affected areas include City Deep Extension 1, 2, 4, 6, and 24; Droste Park Extension 7; Electron; Elladoone; Elands Park; City and Suburban Extension 3; Klipriviersberg Estate S. H; Moffat View; Moffat View Extension 3 and 4; Regents Park Extension 3, 4, and 6; Roseacre; Roseacre Extension 1; Rewlatch; Rewlatch Extension 1, 2, 3, and 6; Risina; Steeledale; South Hills; South Hills Extension 1; The Hill Extension 8; Tulisa Park; Tulisa Park Extension 3 and 5; and Unigray.

“City Power regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by this interruption.” said the entity.

Frustrated residents protested on Thursday

Earlier on Thursday, frustration reached a peak among residents, leading to protests. The outage, attributed to overloaded powerlines aggravated by illegal connections, has been a recurring issue in these communities.

In light of these challenges, City Power urges residents in Johannesburg to refrain from overloading the network and to use electricity responsibly, especially during peak hours. Additionally, they advise unplugging appliances during the outage to prevent potential damage upon power restoration.

The protests disrupted some operations, hindering the timely resolution of outages.

Despite these obstacles, progress was made, with 98% of power supply restored to customers in Pennyville and Noordgesig by Thursday evening. However, repairs are ongoing in specific areas, such as Elands Street, where a faulty mini-substation caused an outage due to overload on an overhead line.

Restoration efforts continue unabated

City Power reassures Johannesburg residents that restoration efforts continue unabated, with the aim of swiftly returning power to all affected areas. Cooperation from residents is crucial to minimise disruptions and ensure the efficient completion of maintenance work.

As Sunday approaches, City Power urges affected Johannesburg residents to bear with them during the planned outage. The entity emphasised that the temporary inconvenience is essential for long-term service reliability.

City Power remains committed to providing a dependable electricity supply to all residents.
