An underwater kite promises to generate clean electricity
From the home of IKEA and my grandfather Carl, another Swedish company may have figured out how to fly a kite underwater to produce electricity. I’m Karthus Cyber Guy. The Dragon 12 physically resembles a kite and is designed to move in a similar figure, A pattern that a kite does in the air, except it takes flight underwater while just below the surface of the water. The Figure 8 pattern accelerates the flow of water over its wings and multiplies the output of its turbine, capable of producing 1.2 megawatts of energy. Which is about 1/3 of a wind turbine. Minesto, the company behind this product, expects that the levelized cost of electricity will be much lower than an offshore turbine, so their energy will be much cheaper for customers. Something really cool about this product that we’ve got our eye on is that it was commissioned to provide electricity for the Faroe Islands, a group of islands between Iceland and Norway which aim to use 100% of clean onshore electricity by 20-30.
