Lily Gladstone reveals Leonardo DiCaprio's sweet text to celebrate her Killers of the Flower Moon Oscar nomination: 'He was just so proud'

Lily Gladstone revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio was one of the first people to congratulate her on her Oscars nomination.

A native of Kalispell, Montana, Gladstone, 37, made history when she received a nod for Best Actress for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, becoming the first Native American to be nominated in that category.

And her on-screen husband, 49, who plays Wold War I veteran Ernest Burkhart, promptly reached out with a text her to offer his congratulations.

While speaking with Extra’s Billy Bush, the actress revealed the encouraging comment he sent her after her nomination was revealed on Tuesday.

‘He was just so proud, and then I told him that I was watching with my parents and “we’re celebrating me, but we’re also, like, collectively very pissed off for you,”‘ she said, noting his lack of being nominated for his role in the Martin Scorsese production.

After sharing a glimpse into DiCaprio’s comment, Gladstone turned back to the moment at hand and directed her own comments to the actor’s brilliance as a performer.

‘He did such an incredible job in this, and, like, just, he made an impossible character just so vivid, and it made my job so much easier, so I really want to share this, this moment with him,’ the actress, who is of Piegan Blackfeet (Siksikaitsitapi), Nez Perce (Nimíipuu) and European heritage, explained of his performance.

The great-great granddaughter of Kainai Nation chief Red Crow added, ‘You know, he told me right before the [Golden Globes], “No matter the outcome, I think you’re amazing and I’m proud of you.”‘

In response, Gladstone called DiCaprio: ‘The greatest actor.’

The Revenant Oscar winner also made a point to take part in the celebration of Gladstone’s achievement on social media.

‘Congratulations to my dear friend @LilyGladstone for making Oscars history, as the first Native American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in Killers Of The Flower Moon, and the fourth Indigenous actress to ever earn a nomination in the category,’ he gushed on Instagram.

He wrapped up his post by writing, ‘And to this powerful film’s nine other nominations – telling this story with all of you has been an honor.’

Gladstone wasted little time in responding her co-star’s high praise in his social media comment, writing, ‘Thank you, Leo. For all of it.’

Co-written by Scorsese and Eric Roth, Killers Of The Flower Moon tells the true story of the ‘reign of terror’ that left two dozen Native Americans dead.

The Apple-backed film, based on a 2017 book of the same name by David Grann, is Scorsese’s first attempt at the Western genre.

Like the best-selling book, the screenplay depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma.

Killers Of The Flower Moon’s 10 Academy Award nominations also included Best Picture, Best Director for Martin Scorsese and Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro.

That’s the third highest amount of noms for the upcoming Oscars, just behind Oppenheimer with 13 and Poor Things with 11.

After making its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2023, the epic crime drama film had its global theatrical rollout on October 20.

Killers Of The Flower Moon went on to be released on Video On Demand (VOD) platforms on December 5, that led to it becoming available from streaming on Apple TV+ beginning on January 12, 2024.

The 96th Academy Awards, which will honor the best in films in 2023, is set to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 10, with Jimmie Kimmel serving as host of the festivities for the ABC production fourth time.

Gladstone has been out on the promotional trail during the awards season, which included her stopping by to visit SiriusXM Studios in a multi-colored dress on Thursday in New York City

In a true sign that believers in themselves should never give up on a dream, Gladstone has shared how she nearly quit acting just before she landed the role as Mollie Burkhart in the Western film.

In fact, she was so dismayed at her situation on the career front that she decided to sign up for a data analytics course, but then destiny reared its beautiful face.

‘I had my mom’s old community college that she retired teaching at, I had their website pulled up and I had the course I was zeroing in on,’ she shared of the experience.

She continued, ‘I had my wallet there with my debit card out, so I could start punching in the numbers… I was on my computer doing that when I saw the little gmail notification that I had a Zoom scheduled with Marty [Scorsese].’

It’s from that gmail that she learned she was picked for the role, and the rest is Hollywood history.
