Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has given invaluable tips on steering and nurturing a company. Drawing from his extensive experience, Bezos outlined strategies that have propelled Amazon to the forefront of global commerce.

According to Andy Jassy, who is currently the CEO of Amazon, Bezos had an innate ability to inspire teams to think expansively. In a 2017 interview with Four Peaks TV, Jassy recounted how Bezos encouraged teams to think beyond initial ideas, encouraging a culture of innovation and forward-thinking within the company.

“Big things start small. The biggest oak starts from an acorn,” remarked Bezos in 2017, highlighting the importance of laying strong foundations for growth.

Bezos started a culture of high expectations throughout Amazon, setting exceptionally high standards that pushed employees to excel. This ethos, as explained by Jassy, permeated the organisation, even in Bezos’ absence from meetings.

A key principle advocated by Bezos was to be “strategically patient and tactically impatient,” prioritising speed without compromising long-term vision. This approach allowed Amazon to navigate challenges while staying focused on its overarching goals.

Bezos changed Amazon’s meeting culture by implementing a “two-pizza rule” and only allowing some participants that two pizzas could comfortably feed, Business Insider reported. This, he believes, will enhance productivity and collaboration. Rejecting conventional presentations, Bezos favoured detailed memos that provided context and structure for discussions.

Furthermore, Bezos underscored the importance of customer obsession over competitor fixation, a philosophy that has underpinned Amazon’s success. Soliciting customer input from the company’s inception, Bezos demonstrated a keen understanding of consumer needs and preferences.

In decision-making, Bezos championed the “disagree and commit” strategy, encouraging constructive dissent while maintaining a commitment to collective goals. Distinguishing between Type 1 and Type 2 decisions, Bezos advocated for swift, decisive action based on imperfect information.
