Ginebra, 7 may (EFE).- El alto comisionado de la ONU para los derechos humanos, Volker Türk, mostró este martes su preocupación por el creciente número de periodistas acusados, condenados y encarcelados en Rusia por su labor informativa independiente y pidió poner fin a estos “ataques a la libertad de expresión”.

“La intensificación de la represión contra el trabajo independiente de los periodistas debe cesar de inmediato, y el derecho a informar, un componente clave del derecho a la libertad de expresión, debe ser respetado”, aseguró Türk en un comunicado emitido por su oficina.

Esta represión se habría intensificado desde el comienzo de la invasión rusa de Ucrania en febrero de 2022 en un intento de Rusia de “controlar la narrativa” tanto en lo relativo a cuestiones internas del país como a la conducción de las hostilidades en territorio ucraniano, según el alto comisionado.

Como resultado de esta intensificación, el número de periodistas encarcelados en Rusia ha alcanzado un máximo histórico, con al menos una treintena cumpliendo penas de entre cinco años y medio y 22 de cárcel acusados de cargos como terrorismo, extremismo, difusión de información falsa o traición, entre otros.

En este sentido, Türk recordó que, tras la muerte del líder opositor ruso Alexéi Navalni el pasado febrero al menos siete periodistas se han enfrentado a cargos administrativos penales por supuestos vínculos con el fallecido opositor y su Fundación Anticorrupción o por criticar las acciones rusas en Ucrania.

Ante esta situación, instó a las autoridades rusas a retirar de forma inmediata los cargos contra los periodistas detenidos “únicamente por hacer su trabajo”, así como a ponerlos en libertad.

También pidió al Gobierno ruso que modifique su legislación a fin de que cumpla con los principios de legalidad, necesidad y proporcionalidad del derecho internacional, ya que, alertó, es frecuente el uso de leyes contra el terrorismo y el extremismo para acusar a estos periodistas.

“La población rusa tiene cada vez más restringido el acceso a información y puntos de vista no estatales, lo que obstaculiza su capacidad para beneficiarse de fuentes diversas y tomar decisiones plenamente informadas sobre asuntos de vital interés público”, concluyó.
