As her alma mater faces funding issues, Alicia Keys is investing in the next generation of performing arts.
Along with her label Roc Nation, the Grammy winner, 43, donated $60,000 to a GoFundMe organized by 7th grade student Tennyson Artigliere to save the theater program at the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) in New York City.
In addition to the $53,000 already raised, her donation will allow the fundraiser to surpass its $102,000 goal, which is required to maintain the school’s partnership with theater company Waterwell.
Fellow alum Jeremy Allen White previously urged his followers to donate as well, sharing a link to the GoFundMe on his Instagram Story.
‘This is where I went to high school, it’s an incredible program with some incredible teachers,’ the Golden Globe winner wrote. ‘Please help IF YOU ARE ABLE. I have donated.’

Keys also told Artigliere she will continue to help raise money for the program until the city is able to fund it, according to the Daily News.
‘When I told my class, people couldn’t believe it,’ said 12-year-old Artigliere.
Although the funds raised are enough to continue the school’s partnership with Waterwell after the April 12 deadline, a spokesperson for PPAS told the Daily News that other arts partners are under consideration.
The school’s PTA and parent body will vote on how to allocate the funds in the coming weeks.
‘I wanted to save my school, I wanted to make a difference,’ said Tennyson. ‘The day I received the email that the performing arts program would be cut, I immediately messaged my school group chat.’
She added: ‘We brainstormed about what we could do. We wouldn’t let the program that brought so many students so much happiness and brought us together be cut short.’
Keys’ cause is a personal one, as she was also 12 when she enrolled at PPAS, getting signed to her first label shortly after graduation.
The artist has since gone on to win 16 Grammy Awards, most recently taking home this year’s Best Immersive Audio Album for her the re-release of her 2003 sophomore studio album The Diary of Alicia Keys.

Last year, Keys debuted her off-Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen, loosely based on her teen years living in Manhattan Plaza.
Meanwhile, White won his second Golden Globe this year for his starring role in The Bear, which also earned him an Emmy Award in 2023.
Other notable PPAS alums include Britney Spears, Claire Danes, Jesse Eisenberg, Lana Candor, Sarah Hyland, and Josh Peck.
