Agency clarifies 2024 SASSA Grant-in-Aid and who’s eligible

You may apply for 2024 SASSA Grant-in-Aid as an additional stipend to your existing grant. However, you must already be receiving a government grant, and it is not eligible to just anyone. Specifically, as the cost of living in South Africa rises, the South African Social Security Agency acknowledges that its most vulnerable beneficiaries need more assistance to make ends meet each month.

Therefore, 2024 SASSA Grant-in-Aid was created as an addition to people already receiving either Disability, Older Persons or War Veterans grants. It is not applicable to any of the 2024 SASSA Children’s grants. Here’s the thinking behind it, how much it pays, and how you can apply …

The additional government stipend is for SASSA recipient who require full-time care at home and who need the extra resources to hire someone to provide that care. Also note that the full amount does not apply if you are already in a state-sponsored care facility.

2024 SASSA Grant-in-Aid recently went up in April by R20 from R510 to R530. And if you team it with an existing Older Persons, War Veterans or Disability grant and it will pay R2 710 (60-years old), and R2 730 (75-years old).

MEDICAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED

As mentioned above, to be eligible for 2024 SASSA Grant-in-Aid you must already be a primary grant recipient. The agency will then use an assessor – either a state or private doctor – who will gauge if you do indeed need full-time care at home.

Furthermore, the main criteria for this assessment is based on mental or physical disability. If you are in possession of a report, it will not be accepted by the agency if it is older than three months. Likewise, if you’re already receiving care in a state facility, you will not be eligible for the additional funds.
