Actor starred in a film about a nuclear accident days before a real-life accident
In 1979, you starred in The China Syndrome in about an accident in a nuclear power plant. 12 days after the movie opens, there’s a real accident at a nuclear power plant in Harrisburg, PA 3 Mile Island. Do you think the combination of your film and real life contributed to the fear about building any more nuclear power plants? I do. I do. I must say I first got involved in this project because I thought it was a great horror movie. I was not necessarily pro nuclear. Anti was a horror picture and it was it was haunting. It was amazing. Amazing moment and has left an issue. It’s been one of my major issues for the rest of my life. But here’s my question unintentionally. Do you think that it LED because people weren’t building nuclear power plants in this country anymore to the burning of more fossil fuel and therefore more climate change? Well that that’s a very recent point of view to look at it since the climate has happened back then we still were limited in our. Our nuclear power plants. And there’s some deep concerns, but I think it did. So, yes. And if you ask me now. After having spent 40 years just absolutely anti nuke even including power plants I have to say I’ve changed my mind and and versus the versus our situation with climate now what has to what has to add the risk of possibly having nuclear plants as part of our way to how to solve this problem. Do you think that that’s a reasonable solution now I think it is. I think it is in terms of there’s still limitations as to the quality of the plants that are being made. But yes, I do.
