A sports car disguised as an SUV
NOT everyone will have the privilege of owning a sports car. These vehicles are often bought purely out of emotion rather than necessity. Even if you could afford one, you’d likely end up with a more practical vehicle. That’s why sports cars are low-volume sellers regardless of the market segment. However, in 2002, Porsche, the iconic sports car manufacturer, defied expectations with the Cayenne, its first SUV.
Fast forward to 2024, and we now have the latest iteration of the Porsche Macan. While the introduction of these SUVs might have seemed like a dilution of the sports car brand, it’s arguable that they’ve made the brand even more desirable. Alongside the Cayenne, these two vehicles make up more than half of the brand’s overall sales. By venturing into SUV territory, Porsche was able to fund its sports car development. However, being a sports car brand from the outset, the Macan isn’t just another luxury crossover SUV. As cliché as it sounds, the 2024 Porsche Macan, along with the Cayenne, are SUVs that only Porsche could create.
The sports car of SUVs
First, let me share a secret: the 2024 Porsche Macan, despite its newness, isn’t riding on a new platform. It utilizes the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform, which dates back to the first-generation Audi Q5. On paper, one might assume it would feel inferior to the second-generation Q5 and its MLB Evo platform. However, this is Porsche we’re talking about, and they never disappoint when it comes to the driving experience.
The MLB platform underwent refinement by Porsche’s engineers, not only during the Macan’s development before its 2014 release but also through incremental updates over the past decade. Yes, the 2024 Porsche Macan is a 10-year-old car, but it boasts a decade’s worth of chassis expertise, making it the sports car among compact luxury crossover SUVs.
While this may be the base model of the Macan, labeling it as “base” does it a disservice. Despite being priced a million or two higher than rivals like the BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Macan offers a plethora of chassis systems not available in its key competitors. These include systems like Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), and the Sport Chrono package, which enhances Porsche Stability Management (PSM) capabilities, among other features.
Thrilling drives
Thanks to these systems and Porsche’s commitment to transforming every vehicle into a sports car, the 2024 Porsche Macan can shift from a docile compact luxury SUV to one filled with personality and excitement. Switch the vehicle to its most aggressive Sport Plus setting, and it becomes a proper track machine. The PASM lowers the vehicle ride height and stiffens the suspension, while the PDCC eliminates remaining body roll. Combined with permanent rear-based all-wheel drive (AWD), the Macan offers exceptional cornering grip. The steering provides precision, response, and road feel, making the Macan feel like an extension of the driver’s fingertips.
Recently, I had the opportunity to test these systems on the track during a PGA Cars World of Supercars event. The Macan’s capabilities on the track, thanks to its advanced systems, are unmatched in its segment. The combination of technologies creates a driving experience that sets the Macan apart from other SUVs in its price range.
Even in less aggressive settings like Sport or Custom Individual mode, the Porsche Macan remains versatile. It can transition from docile to athletic or even track-ready with a simple adjustment of the steering wheel drive mode switch. While other brands’ drive mode buttons may seem gimmicky, Porsche ensures that the driving experience is always top-notch.
Practicality meets luxury
Despite its sporty nature, the Macan remains comfortable, refined, and perfectly suitable for daily use. The 261-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission provide ample power while maintaining efficiency. The adaptive suspension and 20-inch wheels offer a supple ride, though slightly firmer than some competitors. The sporty exhaust note can be subdued when desired, contributing to the Macan’s refinement.
The interior of the Macan is timeless and distinctly Porsche, with a horizontal dash that creates a sense of width. The build quality is impeccable, with premium materials throughout the cabin. The interior design may not be as flashy as some competitors’, but Porsche prioritizes the driving experience above all else.
While the interior has been modernized since the Macan’s debut in 2014, Porsche has avoided excessive use of large screens and complicated infotainment systems. The signature Porsche analog gauges add charm to the cockpit, enhancing the driving experience. However, Android Auto is not available in the Macan, which may disappoint some users.
In terms of practicality, the Macan offers adequate space for passengers and cargo, although it may not be class-leading. The rear seats provide decent headroom and legroom, while the cargo area offers sufficient storage space. Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are limited, with lane departure warning and lane keeping assist being the primary features.
The Porsche Macan may not excel in terms of space or practicality, nor does it boast the flashiest interior design. However, its focus on delivering a thrilling driving experience sets it apart from other compact luxury SUVs. With its versatile chassis, responsive steering, and obedient powertrain, the 2024 Porsche Macan is a sports car disguised as an SUV. It offers a unique blend of performance and practicality, making it a worthy investment for enthusiasts seeking excitement without sacrificing everyday usability.
