‘Iconic building to be restored’

Mayor says DBKL to work with Khazanah on refurbishment

THE Prime Minister has directed for the former Federated Malay States (FMS) Survey Department building in Kuala Lumpur to be refurbished by Khazanah Nasional Berhad.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh said the land was owned by the Federal Land Commisioner.

“Khazanah had informed us that it is still in the planning process and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will collaborate with them in the work process,” he said.

The FMS building, which has been abandoned for two decades, is situated at the intersection of Jalan Raja and Jalan Tun Perak along the same row as the iconic Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad.

StarMetro’s report on April 17.

StarMetro previously reported that the ceiling and wall of the building had collapsed, but confusion over ownership had delayed repairs.

Kamarulzaman said there was a recent meeting with Khazanah, but the plan was still being developed.

“The decision to refurbish exists, but there is no set date yet for implementing the plan,” he said during the Teh Hijau Kuala Lumpur programme at Stadium Bola Sepak Kuala Lumpur in Bandar Tun Razak.

DBKL through Teh Hijau hosted an open house for city dwellers, featuring food from Kuala Lumpur’s night market vendors.

To enhance the festive atmosphere, various Hari Raya Aidilfitri-themed competitions were held such as ketupat weaving, decorating pulut kuning, Hari Raya-themed colouring contests, Raya make-up contests, Raya fashion contests and Raya karaoke contests.

Other activities included lucky draws and a performance by local artist Bell Ngasri.

There were also Rahmah and AgroMadani sales.
