Golden retriever named Trigger who fathered 300 guide dog puppies in 39 litters finally retires

By any reckoning, it is a well-deserved retirement. Golden retriever Trigger is finally calling it a day after fathering more than 300 guide dog puppies.

The nine-year-old is dad to 39 litters – one of which included an incredible 16 puppies.

In total, 294 of Trigger’s offspring have been bred by the Guide Dogs charity and a further 29 by other assistance dog groups and guide dog schools – putting his grand stud total at 323.

His latest litter consists of five girls – Jenny, Rita, Hermione, Sandy and Indy – and one son, Billy

The eight-week olds are about to start their guide dog training and will be living with volunteer puppy raisers for the next year

The six pups are the very last of the ‘Triglets’ – an affectionate name given to Trigger’s offspring by volunteers and guide dog owners.

Over the years, guide dogs sired by Trigger have worked in London, Glasgow, Cardiff, Guernsey, the Isle of Wight and even as far afield as France and the Netherlands.

Trigger will see out his retirement in Banbury, Oxfordshire, with volunteer Sarah Bryne, who has looked after him for seven years and will now officially adopt him

Janine Dixon, head of breeding operations at Guide Dogs, said: ‘Trigger’s wonderful, gentle nature and excellent health have made him the perfect asset to our breeding program.

‘We hope that in a few years his son Billy may join the breeding program to continue Trigger’s legacy.’
