Luis Diaz: Why the Liverpool star would be justified in wanting out

Luis Diaz could reportedly push for a transfer away from Liverpool this summer. He might be justified in doing it.

The Telegraph reports that there’s a big question mark hanging over Luis Diaz and his future at Liverpool. The Colombian has met with his agent on Merseyside recently amid talk of interest in him.

The major interest is from Paris Saint-Germain, a club in desperate need of a left-winger this summer. Kylian Mbappé is off, after all, and he’s not exactly easy to replace.

Now, when PSG are involved, players’ eyes tend to light up. Their incredible wealth translates directly to their stars, for one, and Diaz will be no different.

And finances here are very, very relevant. As the Telegraph explains, Diaz remains on the original contract that he signed over two years ago.

That’s unusual at Liverpool, who tend to quickly bump up a player’s wages once they’ve performed at the club. Their Colombian, though, received no such pay rise.

It means Diaz is on £55k per week, which is significantly lower than teammates who arrived afterwards. Per Capology, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo are each on £120k per week. Darwin Nunez – who joined six months after Diaz – is on £140k.

That’s an enormous gap, given Diaz has objectively done more for Liverpool than those three. His efforts in the 2022 cup wins should have led to some sort of new contract.

But they didn’t. And now there’s a decision to make.

Luis Diaz – stay or go?

Diaz can at the very least demand a new contract. But it’s very possible that he’d prefer a move this summer as there’s got to be a feeling of under appreciation there – even just minor.

On top of that, there’s an increasing competition for places. Diaz arrived as, essentially, a starting left-winger for Liverpool but has since seen Gakpo and Nunez arrive in the forward line. Both, in fact, are able to play on his side – and have.

That competition is going to be fiercer than ever in 2024 as players look to impress their new manager. Diaz, instead, could essentially jump to PSG with a guaranteed starting role and a bumper contract.

There’s no guarantee he’ll have either next season for Liverpool. Yes, there are three years left on his contract but in modern football, that won’t keep a player content.

Diaz has a lot of justification for a transfer this summer and the pressure may very well pile on Liverpool.
