5 things to know about Yankees’ Jon Berti

The New York Yankees made a highly-anticipated move Wednesday, acquiring super utility player Jon Berti from the Miami Marlins in a three-team trade.

Berti is exactly what the Yankees needed from a bench perspective. He has experience playing middle infield, third base and all three outfield positions—mostly in center and right field. He’s also a productive hitter coming off a .294/.344/.405 slash line in 2023. In 2022, he led MLB with 41 stolen bases.

Here are five things to know about the Yankees’ new super utility player:

1. A true bench asset with versatility

As we said above, Berti is a true utility player. Though he’s likely to spend the majority of his time in the infield, which is where he’s spent the majority of his career, Berti has experience all over the place. The majority of his time has been spent at third base, but he has over 760 career innings at shortstop and second base as well.

2. Will he be ready for Opening Day?

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the media Wednesday he wasn’t sure who was going to start at third base with starter D.J. LeMahieu on the mend with a foot injury. There’s a chance Berti could start the first game of the season Thursday against the Houston Astros, but Boone mentioned travel issues may play a role in the decision.

3. Stolen bases coming to the Bronx?

Berti brings more to the table than just versatility in the field. He’s also pretty efficient when it comes to swiping bags. His career-high 41 stolen bases in 2022 led MLB, and his 82% stolen base percentage is above the league average.

4. A productive at bat

The 34-year-old should bring plenty of quality at-bats while he wears the pinstripes. Though his career exit velocity (86.6) is a tick under league average, Berti’s career batting average on balls in play (.326) is well above the league average (.294).

5. Arbitration-eligible

Despite being 34 years old, Berti is still arbitration-eligible. He was an 18th-round pick with the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2011 MLB Draft, but he didn’t make his debut until the 2019 season as a September call-up. He is arbitration-eligible for the 2025 season and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
