PCG deploys one of its biggest vessels to Benham Rise

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed one of its biggest patrol vessels to the Philippine (Benham) Rise on Monday following reported presence of China Coast Guard ships in the area.

PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilo said the BRP Gabriela Silang sailed for a two-week mission in Benham Rise as well as in Batanes.

He also said the 84-meter vessel will patrol the vicinity waters to conduct maritime domain awareness and monitor local fishermen, signaling intensified PCG presence in Northern Luzon.

“We will also check the reported Chinese research vessels in Benham Rise,” Balilo said in a statement Monday.
