PETALING JAYA: Two Malaysians were injured after a bomb exploded along Phu Pha Phakdi Road, Mueang district in Narathiwat, Thailand, on Monday.
This was confirmed by the consul-general of Malaysia in Songkhla, Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi, Sinar Harian reported.
“Both victims only suffered minor injuries and they are from Kelantan,” he was quoted as saying.
Fahmi said the victims were aged in their 20s and 30s.
In the 9.35pm incident, more than five motorcycles caught fire, believed to have been caused by an explosive device planted there.
Provinces in southern Thailand, bordering Malaysia, have been grappling with a decades-long, low-level insurgency in which the Thai government has battled groups seeking independence for the predominantly Muslim provinces, such as Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and parts of Songkhla.
According to the Deep South Watch group, which monitors the violence, more than 7,300 people have been killed in the conflict since 2004.
