Family of eight sleep in tent while waiting for home

The Fletcher family never imagined they’d end up living in a tent. They were always rented before. You’ve always had a house. We’ve never done this, so this is pretty much all new for us. But since last September, it’s been their reality. Why only do it’s best for our kids to keep a roof at their head? Cameron and Tamika moving from campsite to campsite with their six children between the ages of one and 10. This one’s meant to go to school next year, but because we don’t have a permanent address. We can’t enroll her in daycare this week. Moving into a suburban park north of Brisbane, where a makeshift camping ground or tent city has appeared in recent months in Premier Steven Miles’s own electorate. Everyone here is going through the same thing. That’s the only way to get help. Everything made more difficult, from getting the kids ready for school to taking care of their basic needs, we’re having to keep. Trying to find ways for them to have breakfast every morning and. Washing is another thing we’ve had to go buy like a solar camping showers from Kmart. The family says they’d be happy to take a 3 bedroom home, but the Department of Housing will only offer them five bedrooms to avoid overcrowding and there are none available. In a statement, the housing department says it has been working with the family since September last year, including providing accommodation which they chose to leave. As we’ve been assisting them to find longer term options, they have declined further offers of accommodation. We’ve been pretty much shut out since September. We we first applied. To get help, they don’t reply to their messages, emails, nothing. Authorities tell 9 News they will try to help the family with regards to social housing. There are eligibility factors that need to be met, including income thresholds. However, the department continues to work with the family to find a private rental and give any other support they might need. Seems to be the only way that you’re gonna get help is to sit there and live in a campsite. Claire Todd Hunter, 9 News.
