Don’t add insult to injury, MCA tells DAP over KKB polls boycott

MCA president Wee Ka Siong said DAP had also criticised his party in the past.

PETALING JAYA: MCA president Wee Ka Siong today asked why his party should help campaign for DAP in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election next month when DAP had bad-mouthed it.

In a video posted on Facebook, Wee pointed to recent remarks by DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook and asked: “After bashing and hurling insults at MCA, now you (DAP) are asking for our help in your campaign? Do you think we have no dignity or feelings?”

“When party members are hurt by the disrespectful words of DAP, do you think I should remain silent as MCA president? This is a matter of the dignity and integrity of my party.”

Wee’s video featured snippets from an episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast where Loke expressed his dislike for MCA, labelling it as a “towkay” party that neglected the Chinese community’s interests.

Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, also said MCA was not a “two-faced and hypocritical” party.

“MCA is a party that is about transparency. If the tables were turned, how would you react if such treatment was directed at your party? Let’s be honest with ourselves,” he said.

Wee also reminded MCA’s partners in Barisan Nasional (BN) of DAP’s previous criticism of the party where it had accused it of “colluding with thieves” and betraying the Chinese community.

“Moreover, MCA was once considered a traitor to the Chinese community for failing to get the Unified Examination Certificate recognised and abolishing the Bumiputera quota system.

“Now, the same party (DAP) is still hurling insults at MCA with all sorts of accusations. Should I (as party president) remain patient about this?” he asked.

Last Friday, MCA announced its decision to not campaign for any non-BN candidate. Pakatan Harapan is still in talks over the selection of a candidate for the May 11 Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

The Selangor state assembly constituency has been represented by an ethnic Chinese assemblyman since 2004. The incumbent for the last three terms was Lee Kee Hiong of DAP, who died recently of cancer.
