If you have any form of social media, you’ve probably seen influencers talking about certain products that you need to buy right now. You might have even clicked the link and bought the product the influencer was promoting without thinking about it. Everyone has it — so you need it too, right?
In a recent episode of The Rachel Cruze Show, money expert Rachel Cruze takes a closer look at trending items you don’t need to buy, despite their online popularity. These three products aren’t worth the money.

Is the Stanley Cup Worth Buying?
Cruze bought the viral Stanley cup and said she loves it, but owning this cup has not changed her life.
“I bought it because — let’s be honest — it was trendy and I saw it everywhere, so I put it into the budget,” said Cruze.
Cruze added that it’s important for influencers to be careful about the words they use, like referring to so many products as “life changing.” Once the latest trend loses its shine, she said we’re back into the cycle of buying something else that promises to change our lives.
Most Stanley cups also come with a price tag of $35 — or more — per cup.
“If it’s not in the budget, it is not worth it,” said Cruze, adding that nobody should go into debt for viral items.

Three Products That Aren’t Worth The Money
Beyond the Stanley cup, Cruze mentioned these purchases that ended up being disappointing.
Amazon Swimsuit
When a swimsuit Cruze had wanted and ordered on Amazon finally arrived in the mail, she said it did not look great. The material was poor quality, and the sizing did not fit properly.
Cruze previously bought inexpensive swimsuits from Amazon that she really liked and was let down by this purchase.
Squeaky Shoes
Cruze said she saw a pair of really cute camel-colored shoes online. She bought them, and while the shoes are comfortable enough to wear, they make a squeaky noise that annoys her anytime she walks in them.
“I almost hate to wear them sometimes, because they are so loud and annoying,” said Cruze, adding that the squeaking could indicate the shoes are not great quality.
Mom Jeans
This final product is a purchase made by Cruze’s sister, who was influenced after hearing that skinny jeans are out of fashion and mom jeans are in style.
“She said she put them on and was like, ‘oh these look terrible,’” said Cruze.
What To Remember Before Making Any Purchases
Many people do buy things they see trending online. When the purchase ends up being not great, Cruze said you can return it and get your money back, but the reality is some stuff that trends is just stuff.
The next time you have the urge to buy new items blowing up in popularity online, Cruze said to remember these things first:
- Take some time to evaluate your needs versus your wants. You may think you need all of this, but Cruze recommends taking emotions out of it before deciding to buy anything.
- Make sure it’s in your budget. The last thing you want is to go into debt for something trendy that isn’t actually great or worth it.
- Practice the 24-hour rule. “If you did not know this thing existed five minutes ago, that means you really don’t need it right now,” said Cruze. Wait 24 hours to decide if you still want it. If you come back and still want it and it’s in the budget, you can buy it.
