Father-of-two wins £3million Omaze six-bed house in Somerset for price of a £10 ticket after family told him he'd 'only win a toaster'

A father-of-two has won a £3million Omaze six-bed house in Somerset for price of a £10 ticket after his family told him he’d ‘only win a toaster’.

Michael Maher, 53, was contacted by Omaze officials to say he’d won a prize and his teenage daughter warned him not to get too excited.

She said he’d probably won a toaster but he’d actually scooped a massive house in Somerset – which does come with a toaster in the kitchen.

IT worker Michael and his wife of 16 years Amanda, 54, have lived in their rented four-bedroom house on the outskirts of Luton, Beds for the past eight years.

Their new spectacular rural retreat comes complete with a tennis court, picturesque gardens and an orangery.

Overjoyed Michael, who is originally from Essex, said: ‘I had a call from Omaze saying I’d won a prize – obviously I was intrigued but my daughter was somewhat sceptical and told me not to get too excited as I’ve probably only won a toaster.

‘Luckily for me it turned out to be a £3 million pound house – that also happens to come with a toaster!’

The couple live with their two children, a son aged 19 and daughter aged 17 – as well as a four-year old cocker spaniel called Ludo.

Michael also has two sons aged 32 and 27 and a grandchild aged two from his first marriage.

And after they realised they had hit the jackpot prize they went off to celebrate at the pub followed by a slap-up Indian meal.

But he has warned his children not to get too excited about their new-found riches – and has refused their requests to quit their Saturday jobs.

He continued: ‘We went to the pub to celebrate and then on for a nice curry – it was your average Friday night really, apart from the fact we’d just become millionaires!

‘When they told us we’d won the house in Somerset, the first thing my daughter said was that she’d had the best kebab in her life last time she was there, so she was delighted we now own a house in such a culinary hotspot.

‘I thought she might be more impressed with the tennis court to be honest, but you can never tell with teenagers!

Michael joked: ‘We have family all over the world and plenty of room for them to come and stay now – if we decide to give them the address that is!

‘We’ve owned property in the past but have been renting for the last eight years – and obviously we’ve been working towards owning our own property again.

‘This win means that dream has now come true, and our family’s future is secure.

The money raised will enable the RSPCA to continue carrying out its vital work – and help their frontline officers to rescue even more animals in desperate need of help.

£3.5million is enough money to keep 50 RSPCA inspectors / rescue officers helping animals on the frontline for a whole year.

Chris Sherwood, RSPCA chief executive, said: ‘We are absolutely thrilled that the Omaze house draw has raised an incredible £3,5000,000 for the RSPCA in just six weeks.

‘As we enter our 200th year, this will help our frontline teams rescue animals at a time when the charity has seen abandonment and neglect reports sadly reach a three-year high.

‘With the cost-of-living crisis taking a heavy toll on animals, we’re incredibly grateful to have partnered with Omaze for a second time and we’d like to thank everyone who entered the draw and helped to raise funds for our vital animal welfare work.

The RSPCA is the first charity partner to benefit from Omaze’s updated donation model, which not only enables it to increase its guaranteed minimum donation tenfold, rising from £100k to £1 million – but has also seen the highest ever raise for an Omaze charity partner to date.

This is the second time the charity has teamed up with Omaze. The first partnership, in 2022, raised £1 million, bringing the total already raised for the RSPCA by Omaze to £4,500,000.
