Maisie Williams felt ‘lost’ during Game of Thrones fame

Maisie Williams felt “lost” at the height of her ‘Game of Thrones’ fame after shooting to stardom at the age of 12.

The actress – now 26 – was just a child when she landed the role of Arya Stark in the hugely popular fantasy TV series and she’s admitted being part of such a big show gave her an identity crisis as she was growing up in the spotlight.

She told The Sunday Times newspaper: “I was so lost for so long and I knew that I was, and when I couldn’t pin down what I felt my identity was within that, it brought me a lot of discomfort.

“Now I feel a lot more comfortable in my own skin. It’s hard to even put myself back there and talk about how tough it was because I think it’s done.”

Maisie went on to admit she felt very down when she was trying to break away from her ‘Game of Thrones’ character but was struggling to land other roles.

She added: “It was at its absolute worst when I was also out of touch with myself – not knowing your identity and that kind of thing – I think rejection at that point felt so personal, so painful.

“I’d solely compare myself to other actresses, and the way people looked, and all of the most destructive ways that you can compare yourself.”

However, she has learned to deal with her issues and has changed her life by moving out of London to the countryside to help her deal with being famous.

Maisie explained: “I just have, for the most part, manufactured my life to make me feel like I’m not famous at all.”

She previously opened up about moving away from the city, admitting she has never felt happier amidst the greenery of the countryside.

In an interview with NET-A-PORTER’s digital title PORTER, she said: “I have just never felt better. What I’ve learned about myself is that I gain a lot more when I am alone, and it’s much harder to do that when you’re out on the scene.

“It’s hard to really let go and there is a tendency to give into pressures while living in that world.”
