After two years with the Toronto Blue Jays, third baseman Matt Chapman is reportedly heading to the San Francisco Giants.
The four-time Gold Glove winner agreed to a three-year, $54-million deal with the Giants on Friday, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman was first to report.
According to Heyman, the contract includes two opt-outs for Chapman but would pay him $20 million in 2024, $18 million in 2025 and $16 million in 2026 if the options are not declined.
Chapman, 30, was named the Gold Glove winner in 2023, helping the Blue Jays advance to the wild-card round for the second year in a row.
After a hot start — he was named American League player of the month in April — Chapman cooled considerably at the plate for the rest of 2023. He slashed .240/.330/.424 with 17 homers and 54 RBIs for the season.
He now joins a San Francisco squad that went 79-83 in 2023, finishing fourth in the NL West.
J.D. Davis handled the lion’s share of work at the hot corner for the Giants last season, and was an above average hitter and defender. Davis is still on San Francisco’s roster, so it is unclear where the 30-year-old fits into the team’s plans for 2024.
The Giants have made multiple big additions this off-season, signing Korean outfielder Jung-Hoo Lee to a six-year, $113 million deal, former Blue Jays reliever Jordan Hicks to a four-year $44 million contract and trading for 2021 AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray. They also added outfielder Jorge Soler on a three-year, $42 deal.
San Francisco also made a change in the dugout, replacing manager Gabe Kapler with Bob Melvin — who served as Chapman’s manager for five years with the Oakland Athletics.
Since Chapman declined the qualifying offer, Toronto will receive a draft pick after the completion of the fourth round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
The Giants will forfeit their second-round pick as well as $500,000 from their international bonus pool.
In his first year with the Blue Jays, Chapman was more productive with the bat (27 homers, 76 RBIs).
The Blue Jays acquired Chapman in a deal with Oakland in March 2022.
The A’s picked Chapman 25th overall in the 2014 MLB Draft and he made his MLB debut with Oakland in 2017.
For his career, Chapman is hitting .240/.329/.461 with 155 homers and 426 RBIs.
