The drive between Los Angeles and the Central Coast will never be the same with the sudden closure of Pea Soup Andersen’s in Buellton after almost 100 years in business. The iconic roadside restaurant which was known for its eponymous pea soup and eclectic design shuttered this week, SF Gate reports. The Los Angeles Times reports the property is slated for redevelopment and the restaurant could reopen after being rebuilt, so this may not be the end of pea soup in Buellton.

The restaurant dates back to 1924 when Danish immigrant Anton Andersen bought a piece of land and opened Andersen’s Electric Cafe with his wife, Juliette. As Buellton grew as a town, Andersen expanded his restaurant with a hotel and dining room, calling it the Bueltmore. In 1947, the restaurant was officially renamed Pea Soup Andersen’s after Juliette’s now famous split-pea soup. The Pea Soup Anderson’s location on the I-5 in Santa Nella remains open.
