Telugu Audience Embraces Malayalam Cinema As Premalu And Bramayugam Score Big Numbers

South Indian cinemas are swiftly gaining prominence, reaching national and international acclaim. Telugu films, in particular, have captivated audiences across India and beyond, with monumental hits like SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali franchise, featuring Prabhas and Anushka Shetty and RRR starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, along with Sukumar’s Pushpa: The Rise- Part 1, headlined by Allu Arjun. Similarly, Kannada movies like KGF by Prashanth Neel and Kantara helmed by Rishab Shetty have found recognition beyond Karnataka. Meanwhile, Malayalam cinema is garnering a substantial following through OTT platforms and appears to be targeting the Telugu audience.

Recent Successes in Malayalam Cinema

On February 9, Girish A. D’s Premalu, starring Naslen K. Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju, was released to critical acclaim for its gripping storyline, music, comedy and stellar performances. Despite being a low-budget production, the film grossed over 50 crore worldwide, emerging as the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of 2024. Following its success, Mammootty’s Bramayugam hit theaters on February 15, receiving praise from both critics and audiences. The horror thriller, directed by Rahul Sadasivan, also stars Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan and Amalda Liz. Bramayugam has grossed Rs 34.05 crore globally, with its India net box office collection on the first day amounting to Rs 3.10 crore. Notably, it attracted significant viewership from Telugu-speaking regions, with Rs 3 lakh coming from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana alone.

Expanding Reach to Telugu Audience

Sithara Entertainments is set to release Bramayugam in the Telugu language, targeting audiences in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Additionally, there are speculations that Girish A.D’s Premalu will be dubbed in Telugu, further solidifying the foothold of Malayalam cinema in the Telugu-speaking states. However, amidst these successes, the Telugu version of the Tamil film Lal Salaam faced underwhelming performances in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, indicating varying reception among Telugu audiences.
