'At end of the day, we needed...': Aaron Jones reflects on USA's defeat against West Indies

NEW DELHI: In the Super 8 of the current T20 World Cup, the USA's stand-in skipper Aaron Jones feels they were unable to score a competitive total against the West Indies.

The Caribbean defeated the United States by a commanding 9 wickets in a match between the hosts of the major event at Bridgetown, Barbados.

Unlike other pitches in the present World Cup, Kensington Oval has given batters an opportunity to express themselves, according to ANI.

The USA performed admirably in the powerplay, scoring 48/1 with Andries Gous leading the way at the batting, despite losing Steven Taylor early.

The USA batting order crumbled in face of a potent bowling unit after Gous and Nitish Kumar formed a promising-looking stand.

Jones noted that the USA players had a difficult night because there weren't many runs scored.

"Tough night for the boys. We had to score about 170-180 today. In the middle overs, we lost wickets in clusters, it goes like that sometimes. At the end of the day, we needed runs on the board," Jones said in the post-match presentation.

Bowling a clean first over, Saurabh Netravalkar kept the opposition at a pitiful 129. The seasoned left-arm pacer stoked expectations of an extraordinary comeback, but in the following over, Shai Hope responded with an enormous maximum.

He unleashed mayhem around the field until the final ball with a single six that opened the floodgates. With every ball that went by, the disparity between the two teams grew more pronounced.

"We tried to go hard with the ball but we know West Indies are a good batting unit," he added.

The USA will take on the reigning champions, England, in their next Super 8 match. Jones thinks the United States can handle the enormous task that lies ahead of them.

"England will be a good game, we are up for a challenge. Need to rest up and get ready for Sunday. Thanks to the fans and their support, for supporting me personally and also the team," he concluded.

On Sunday, the USA will play their final Super 8 game at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
