Donald Trump is About to Flex His Financial Muscle Against Biden

Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign event in Racine, Wisconsin, on June 18, 2024. Trump's campaign and aligned super PACS are said to planning on spending tens of millions of dollars on ads in key states.

Donald Trump's campaign could soon use the major boost in post-conviction donations to pay for ads in the key swing states that could determine who wins November's Election, according to reports.

Federal Election Commission (FEC) reports filed on Thursday that Trump's campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) outraised President Joe Biden and Democratic National Committee (DNC) in donations in the months of April and May.

In April, when Trump was in New York for his hush money trial, the former president's campaign and the RNC raised $76 million. In May, the month when Trump was convicted of 34 felony falsifying business records charges, the Trump campaign, the RNC and the Trump-allied super PAC MAGA Inc raised more than $170 million, around $50 million of which was reportedly donated in the immediate aftermath of the Republicans' guilty verdict.

In comparison, the Biden campaign raised $51 million in April and $85 million in May, meaning that the previous formidable fundraising prowess that the president enjoyed over Trump in the 2024 campaign has now largely disappeared.

The Trump-allied super PAC MAGA Inc. is said to be planning on spending $100 million in paid media between now and Labor Day in September, reported The Washington Post. The New York Times also reports the super PAC is also hoping to spend $30 million in airtime from early July in the battleground states of Pennsylvania and Georgia ahead of a major $100 million advertising push in the summer.

The reported major Republican ad campaign push could be significant in the neck-and-neck battle for the White House race in the key swing states.

The Times reports that Biden's team has already aired or reserved more than $35 million worth of ads in the top six battleground states, whereas Trump's operation has only aired around about $60,000 in ads.

Despite the major difference in ads already paid for, multiple polls suggest that Trump is currently beating Biden in the battleground states where the results are likely to determine who wins November's race overall.

Grant Reeher, a professor of political science at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, said that the ad blitz from the Trump campaign will help keep up the "enthusiasm and commitment to vote" among those already inclined to support the former president, rather than convince those who are still undecided.

"So much of the enthusiasm and commitment on both sides is being driven by dislike of the other candidate and the other party that unfortunately, most of this communication is negative, even attacking," Reeher told Newsweek.

"One thing we've seen regarding outside advertising is that in general, it is almost completely negative in nature. Add to that the particular aspects of this election, and one can only imagine what we'll be seeing in the coming months.

"Will it have an impact? I would think only in limited fashion," Reeher added. "Again, the impressions of the candidates are pretty baked in at this point. Perhaps the ads might fire up a limited number of voters who might have otherwise stayed at home, or voted for a third-party candidate. But in an election expected to be close, any movement could matter."

Steve Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, said the money Biden has spent on television advertising so far has gone to waste.

"Biden's failing campaign continues to light money on fire, including wasting nearly $80 million on stupid television ads that have done nothing to improve Biden's terrible poll numbers nationally and in the battleground states," Cheung told Newsweek.

Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez added in a statement: "The money we continue to raise matters, and it's helping the campaign build out an operation that invests in reaching and winning the voters who will decide this election—a stark contrast to Trump's PR stunts and photo ops that he's pretending is a campaign."
