Drama Drain: Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott Tiresome Storyline?

The Dallas Cowboys have been in the headlines all offseason, with Dak Prescott's contract situation taking center stage.

With Dak's huge cap hit in 2024, the general thought was that the Cowboys would extend Dak, lower his cap hit, and then strengthen the roster in free agency...but Dallas has done neither.

A "will they or won't they" push-and-pull has developed over the last couple of months. Half of the national media thinks Prescott will be signed in 2024, while others think this will be his last year as a Cowboy.

Either way, CBS Sports is tired of the Prescott contract storyline.

"This one may be the most overblown of all, especially since Dallas refuses to give its franchise quarterback a massive deal after a career season," CBS Sports writes. "Prescott is going to be paid by somebody in 2025, but the question that has lingered on for months is if that will be the Cowboys," CBS Sports writes. "The Cowboys haven't actually helped their cause by saying they are committed to Prescott. If Dallas is so committed, why has it not signed the soon-to-be 31-year-old Prescott in a contract year?"

CBS does have a point. If Dallas were intent on keeping Prescott, signing him months ago would have saved them a lot of money. But the Cowboys are straddling the fence with Dak's contract, which has caused this to become a media circus (perhaps by design).

The longer they wait, the more expensive it becomes, and if Dallas hasn't signed Prescott by training camp (a time when they are known to thrash out a deal or two), then it might just be Dak's last year as a Cowboy.

But that brings up another point: if the Cowboys do have a thought about moving on from Dak, then why not do it this offseason and get something in return? Instead of potentially allowing him to walk for nothing next season?

As our own Mike Fisher has previously stated, Dallas is a marketing company that plays football on the side. As long as Prescott isn't signed, that story will always be in the headlines.

Which is exactly where Jerry Jones likes his team to be.
