Canadian soccer star Adriana Leon's journey to the Olympic stage

The countdown is on for the Paris Olympic Games where the pressure is high for Team Canada senior women's national soccer team who are looking to defend their gold medal. And here on this field in Maple is where one of their stars perfected their skills. This is where my love for for soccer really grew and I remember being like five or six playing on this field and like scoring the winning goal. Adriana Leon dreamed of becoming an elite soccer player on this field and went from scoring a game-winning goal in front of friends and family to the world stage for her country. Your first time you represented Canada. Do you remember what that feeling was like? Yeah, I I remember we played China and I was in China and I scored my first goal in my first game. And I just remember, like, feeling like this is exactly like what I meant to be doing. Leon was part of the squad that won Canada's historic gold medal in soccer at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Where is your gold medal? It's my bedroom. Yeah. It's, it's on my bedside table, actually. It's just it's nice to have it open and to, you know, to walk into the room and see it. And just so you know, those are memories I'll never forget. And it was so special. When Canada looks to defend their medal, they will be without long time captain and leader Christine Sinclair, who announced last fall her retirement from international play. The women's team are heading to Spain for training camp in early July to prepare for a new era. Once that final roster comes out, I'll be, you know, a lot more happy about it and excited. But I think the plan is for some family to come over and just my time in, in Paris. And I think, you know, our last Olympics was not ideal with the in terms of like the pandemic and having to be in isolation for for weeks. Ahead of training camp, Leon was named one of the national spokespeople for the sports hydration drink Quench. I think, you know, it's nice that young girls have something to look up to professional athlete being, you know, the face of, of Quench. I think is, is really special. And I think it's, you know, it's inspiring. For City News, I'm Lindsay Dunn.
