Jars of tomato sauce for cooking have been recalled in three U.S. states after being incorrectly packaged.

Hudson Harvest in New York is recalling its Tomato Basil Sauce due to reports of "swelling, leaking, or bursting jars," the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on June 19. "There is a possibility that the product has been under-processed, potentially leading to spoilage organisms or pathogens," the announcement reads.

The affected sauce product was sold in New York, Connecticut, and Maine during May and June. It was sold in transparent, 16-ounce glass jars with a black label featuring white lettering and drawings of food items such as pasta shapes, basil, onion, and tomato.

The product's Universal Product Code (UPC) is 683720301567, which can be found above the bar code. The lot number, located on the side of the jar, is 1042426.

"Consumers should not use this product, even if it does not appear to be spoiled. If you have purchased this product, please return it to the place of purchase for a full refund," the FDA release reads. Any consumers with queries about the product and the recall can contact Hudson Harvest at 1-800-811-3795 (extension 2) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET.

Foodborne viruses can cause food poisoning, leading to a range of unpleasant symptoms and sometimes serious medical issues. Common examples include E. coli, salmonella, and listeria. The FDA says that about 48 million cases of food poisoning occur in the U.S. annually, meaning roughly one in six Americans become ill.

No illnesses have been reported to date from consuming the Hudson Harvest product, and the FDA release does not specify whether the product has been tested for the presence of dangerous food-borne viruses. It has also not yet been classified using the FDA's risk ranking system.

Symptoms of food poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, fever, and headaches. E.coli, salmonella and listeria are among the most common illnesses, with products frequently being recalled due to potential contamination.

For most people, food poisoning can be very unpleasant but will not have a serious impact on their health. But certain groups—including children under 5, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems—are at higher risk of developing a severe illness. Annually, there are about 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths from food poisoning, according to the FDA.

Certain foods are more likely to carry dangerous viruses, such as meat, raw or unpasteurized milk and cheeses, and seafood. They can also be carried by vegetables and eggs.

The FDA recalls numerous products each month due to potential contamination with viruses. Most recently, the federal agency recalled nine chocolate products sold in nine states over fears they could be carrying salmonella. In May, whole cucumbers produced by Fresh Start Produce Sales were recalled, again due to salmonella contamination.
