Angler reels in one of the world's largest ever cod weighing 102lb

Most chippies advertise a 'catch of the day'. So imagine the delight of this British angler, who caught a cod so large it could do fish and chips for 180 people.

Daniel Pipe, 39, was on a fishing trip to Norway with friends when he hooked the monster catch and spent 20 exhausting minutes reeling it in.

The specimen weighed 102lbs 7oz (46.5kg) and measured 160cm (5ft 2ins) long, smashing the previous International Game Fishing Association record for the longest cod ever caught.

As a standard large portion of pre-battered fish weighs 9oz (255g), the impressive catch could provide enough for around 180 fish suppers.

Despite its weight, it was an agonising 1lb under the world record for the heaviest cod.

Mr Pipe, a heavy plant machinery driver from Pontypool, south Wales, celebrated his record with a 'few pints of cider' afterwards.

The married father-of-two said: 'I knew instantly that it was a different class of fish but didn't know just how big it was until it reached the surface.

'It was a really tough fight and it took me about 15 or 20 minutes to reel it in. We couldn't believe our eyes when it breached the surface, it was huge.

'There was near silence on the boat for a minute when we saw it, everyone was in shock and we realised it could be a record.

'But then it was mayhem trying to lift it. We struggled to pull it over the side.'

Mr Pipe said caught fish are normally returned to the sea but after several attempts to revive the cod, it was clear it wouldn't survive.

Along with his friends he returned to shore and weighed and measured it.

He said: 'It is the fish of a lifetime and it left me exhausted afterwards.'

The head of the record fish has been sent off to a Scottish taxidermist to preserve it while the body was donated to the locals of the fishing village of Sandland Brygge in northern Norway to eat.
