Proposed EV solutions are 'costly' and 'won't work very well': Bjorn Lomborg

I will repeal Crooked Joe Biden's insane electric vehicle mandate and we will drill, baby drill. We will drill, baby, drill. The debate over green energy could play a deciding role come the November election, especially in the industrial Rust Belt states where vulnerable Senate Democrats are distancing themselves from President Biden's EV push. Bjorn Lomborg always has something interesting to say about this Copenhagen Consensus president and senior fellow at the Hoover Institute. Bjorn, it's always good to see you. Thanks for being here. So how, how do you see this playing out politically for the president? This push has been expensive and it hasn't been popular. Well, exactly. The big problem with electric cars is they're great for some people, but they're just not great for everyone. And that's the real issue. You have to spend a lot of money. You don't get a lot of people buy in. It's mostly people in rich cities. It'll often be Democrats. And of course, you mostly buy it to virtual signal. If you actually need to go anywhere far, you will drive your gasoline car. And remember, most people, about 90% of everyone who has an electric car also have a backup gas car they will use when they need to go far. So the reality is, even Biden's own Energy Information Administration estimates that by 2050, the US will just have 12% EV cars. So we got to get back to reality. Yes, it's a little part of the solution, but it's not the main part of the solution. You know who is an interesting voice weighing in on all this? Bjorn. Bjorn is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's saying that these environmental issues should not be political. And he said that the current climate change dialogue just isn't working. Listen, I think this whole climate change dialogue is not going to work. I think this has been used for the last few decades. I think we should address it directly what it is, which is pollution. It doesn't matter if it's the Chinese or the Russians, whoever it is, we maybe don't agree with them, but we all have to bring them in and we all have to work together with them. Bjorn, your thoughts? Well, look, he also says that I think all of this has to do with communication. No, it's a question of cost. Look, if this was free or incredibly cheap, of course everyone would rather not put out CO2, which contributes to climate change and is a problem. But when you're asking people to take on much more cost, are you willing to have a car? They'll go not as far and they'll be less convenient and they'll be more costly. Of course not. Most people are going to say no to that. And this is the real point. It's not about communication. It's not about rebranding and saying, oh, let's call it pollution instead of global warming. It's about that the solutions that we're proposing right now are costly but won't work very well. Speaking of which, there's a new EV survey out for June of 2024 and it shows exactly what we believe we've been hearing and that is the likelihood of current EV owners to switch back to their normal cars. And the numbers, 46% of EV owners are doing just that. Bjorn, this goes back to what? I swear you have written more about this than anybody else, often published in the Wall Street Journal. Innovate around this. Don't push it prematurely. Make cars people want and feel comfortable and safe. And final thought, exactly. Look, fundamentally, if EV cars were so great that everybody wanted them, you don't need to ban them. If you need to ban them, it must be because you have a problem. Yes, you should innovate, Yes, you should make them better and eventually it'll be a significant part of the solution. But right now you're you have to push these pretty bad cars. Maybe people, maybe you met mandate. If they're so great, you wouldn't have to mandate them right. Exactly. Sorry about that. But I no, I probably did that wrong. But you probably have in your mind that the that the activists out there trying to ban the gas guzzlers, right Bjorn, you're always great. Thanks for coming out with us. And they are in a lot of European countries. Yes, thank you always good.
