Signings Detroit Lions should make in NFL free agency before camp

With the Detroit Lions set to take part in training camp next month, the team should be spending the summer break exploring ways to improve the roster, something general manager Brad Holmes is no doubt doing.

When it comes to money, that isn't an issue. According to Over the Cap, the Lions have a whopping $34.5 million in cap space, the fourth-most in the NFL. That gives Holmes the ability to make multiple moves if he wants to further bolster Detroit's already impressive roster.

Knowing that, there are two players in particular the Lions should have their eyes on ahead of training camp. Here's a look at who they are and why Detroit needs to sign them.

WR Michael Thomas

Thomas is not the receiver he once was and hasn't been able to stay healthy the last four years, but it wouldn't hurt to bring him in to add more depth at wide receiver, where Kalif Raymond is currently slated to be a starter on the boundary opposite Jameson Williams.

On top of his experience out wide, Thomas has also worked out of the slot, giving the Lions some options. He'll definitely come cheap and on a one-year deal, so there's really nothing to lose by bringing him in.

DE Emmanuel Ogbah

The Lions added Marcus Davenport this offseason, but that was that for significant additions along the edge, where Detroit is hoping for Davenport to thrive and take pressure off Aidan Hutchinson. While Davenport has the ability to do that, he has dealt with injury issues over his career, making him a question mark.

Detroit can shore up the edge by bringing in Emmanuel Ogbah, who tallied 5.5 sacks in a part-time role last season. Ogbah has totaled as many as nine sacks twice during his career. In addition to his ability outside, Ogbah is also capable of playing on the interior, giving Detroit another depth option there, also.
