Andre De Grasse finishes 3rd in the men's 100m sprint in Turku

Well, time for the men's 100m final and I can tell you that we have some rather special sprinting from Lamont Marshall Jacobs in his heat 9.99. A very comfortable win for the European champion from last week. Retained his title from Munich two years ago and Tsarov goes in lane one remain 8. Excuse me, I think we're going from the outside in. My fault. The Estonian goes in eight. There's Blake. Blake in his heat running at 10.25 to qualify by Wright. Asimarti goes in six. The Ghanaian 26 year old best of 990. A couple of years back Asimarti ran 1012 in his heat here. Jacobs, well, he was a class apart in qualifying 9.99, won his heat. The winner of the other heat, Ali goes here as well. He's in the lane beside him. Jacobs goes in five. Ali goes in four. The Italian European Championships silver medalist last week behind Jacobs. Remember, they took one and two, of course, and then won the four by 100 meters. Final de gras, well, what can he do? The Olympic champion at 200 meters from Tokyo, the Canadian goes in lane 3 de gras in qualifying at 10.15. I don't think the gloves have come off just yet. Fuchs goes in lane two and Sir Marcus Fuchs of Austria and Iluka Rico Iluka of Finland goes in lane one. Fuchs by the way, in qualifying 10.18 got through as a non automatic qualifier and Iluka likewise. In fact, just checking there are nine men in this final trying to see who has been added because they were due to have been 8 + 3 + + 2 non automatic qualifiers. So I'll confirm that for you. But as they load themselves into their blocks, no doubting the favorite, it is Lamont Marcel Jacobs. And actually just looking at this start list, it's only got 8 names on it. So we'll focus on the most important protagonists. Jacobs, the Olympic champion, double European champion after his win in Rome last week, goes in lane 5999. Only the second or third time he's broken 10 seconds since his win in Tokyo. Really good start there from Ali in the orange. He's matching his compatriot stride for stride here now. And then Jacobs begins to really ease ahead. Just power pulling him to the front there, taking that one from Ali and Andre De Grasse, the time 993 and it's legal plus 1.5. And that will make people sit up around the world and take note. 993. Jacobs is easing into form. And you know what, Anna? I was lucky enough to be in the stadium commentating those European Championships last week. And Jacobs didn't break 10 seconds in Rome, but he just looked a little bit more like his old self. You know, he he just oozed a sort of confidence, I don't want to say an arrogance, although there's nothing wrong with that with sprinters. But to Jacobs 992, Ali 996. And Jacobs most certainly is back. There were hints of it in the heat with 999, but 992 here tonight in Turku shows that Lamont Marcel Jacobs is on course for Paris. And I wouldn't. I don't think you'll get very good odds if you bet for him to retain his title at the Olympic Games. Well, bet you wish he'd put a bet on maybe week ago before Rome changed massively. Jacobs, he's just kind of the comeback king. He's always trying to prove himself. That win at the Olympics shocked people and he's defended it since and said it wasn't a shock to him. It was an area record, a European record, 980 in Tokyo. He then went 995 in Munich that to win the European Championships. That's the last time we saw him run. The next time we saw him run sub 10 until today. And now he's done it twice in one day and that is super impressive from Jacobs. It was a great start. He then seemed to relax a little bit in the middle. And when he needed to bring that extra pressure in the last 30 meters, it was there for days. He could have could have gone earlier for me and Chatura Aloo Ali of Italy, that's his first sub 10. He's not nearly a 10th of his lifetime. Best to go 996 and a good, good run from Andre De Grasse as well to go 10 dead and come third in that race. He was coming through hard as well, the Olympic 200m champion. So I think he's shown some good form here today as well. There it is. Lamont Marcel Jacobs is back with a bang at Capital B992 after a 9.99 in his heat 45 minutes or an hour or so earlier. Chituro Ali, 2nd 996 a person.
