Wyche: Chargers' offense looking to get 'medieval' under OC Greg Roman 'The Insiders'
Selfishly, as a quarterback, I'd love to throw the ball every time, but if we if we throw it one time or we throw it 100 times, as long as we're winning and find a way to do that, it's good with me. They're going to be fun to hand the ball off too. And kind of like I mentioned earlier, we don't have pads on. So it's you can't really feel that the impact of the run game right now, but you can feel the juice. You know, they've got energy, they bring it and be able to hand the ball off to them and then go fight for a couple yards. It'll be awesome to see. Are Steve Whites out there in LA? Steve, this is going to be one of the stories of the NFL, one of the stories the entire sports world, Jim Harbaugh in LA. Justin Herbert has been through several different offenses already through the course of his career here. He's had a lot of different changes. What do you anticipate we're seeing from Justin Herbert in a Jim Harbaugh, Greg Roman offense in 2024? The back end of what you said is the point of exactly what's going on here, Tom, because with all the rave reviews that Justin Herbert has been receiving during mini camp, let's not forget that tandem of Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh. Think about the 49ers. Think about what Greg Roman did with Baltimore, thinking what Harbaugh did in Michigan. They run the football. And Greg Roman said at practice on Wednesday, we know what the identity of our football team is going to be. And I asked him specifically off to the side what that is. He said aggressive and in your face. There are going to be a balanced offense, which means they're going to run the football, which is something that they have not done with the Chargers since Herbert has been there. Since he was drafted in 2020, the Chargers have ranked 28th in rushing. The plan is to change that. Now, can they do that with the old Baltimore Ravens running back tandem of Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins joining Isaiah Spiller, who has been with the Chargers? We'll see. But Roman said that doesn't mean they're going to take the ball out of off of Herbert's arm. They just hope to use the run game to set up the pass game. Remember, they go out and they draft Joe Alt. They move into right tackle. They feel they have the huge type of offensive line now that can block for the run game. And according to Greg, Roman get medieval when they have to. Steve, thank you very much. I love that term. Underutilized in the NFL, medieval type of play. We'll talk to you again.
