Sabrina Carpenter Makes Hot 100 History With ‘Please Please Please' and ‘Espresso'; Charli XCX's ‘Brat' Debuts at No. 3
All eyes are on the girls - Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan that is - as the latest albums and songs charts reveal career-best numbers for all three artists.
Nearly six albums into her career, Carpenter makes Hot 100 history with her new single "Please Please Please" debuting at No. 2, and her summery single "Espresso" lifting to a new height at No. 3. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter becomes the first solo act in the history of the 66-year-old Billboard chart to land two simultaneous top-three hits. Carpenter joins the Beatles in notching two concurrent top-three hits since the group was the first act to achieve the landmark in February of 1964 with "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You," as noted by Billboard.
"Please Please Please" opens with 50.3 million streams and 533,000 airplay impressions as "Espresso" collects almost 48 million in radio impressions and 38.4 million streams with 28,000 digital and physical sales, according to data from Luminate. Both tracks are featured in her upcoming album, "Short n' Sweet," due Aug. 23.
On the Billboard 200, Charli's "Brat" debuts at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 as the highest-charting effort of her decades-long career. On the same chart, Roan's 2023 debut album "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" climbs to the Top 10 for the first time since its release in September.
The albums chart have been a hot topic of conversation for the last several weeks with new releases from pop mainstays flooding the Top 10. Following new album releases from Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift, No.s 2 and 1 on the new Billboard 200, respectively, Charli's "Brat" arrives at No. 3. The rollout for Charli's 18-song deluxe album has been extensive: pop-up shows, a starry music video, a mural painting to announce three additional songs, and more headline-making activations have pushed the album to the forefront of the cultural zeitgeist.
"Brat" debuts with 82,000 equivalent album units earned and nearly 47 million on-demand official streams (that number includes deluxe issue streams). Charli's highest chart placement prior to "Brat" was in 2022 with "Crash," which debuted and peaked at No. 7.
Roan, meanwhile, finally enters the Top 10 with "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" lifting to No. 10 from its previous No. 12 peak. It hit the mark with 40,000 equivalent album units and an 87% increase in album sales, likely tied to Roan's impressive live performances for summer festivals including Coachella, and more recently, for New York's Governor's Ball and Tennessee's Bonnaroo (who moved her from a small tent to the mainstage just a few days before the festival took place).
The only other new release on the Billboard 200 this week is Bon Jovi‘s "Forever" album which debuts at No. 5 with 52,000 equivalent album units (of which album sales comprise 50,000) and 2.31 million streams. "Forever" is the band's 22nd charting effort on the albums chart.
