The State of the Race
Not to focus too much attention on one show, but the number of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie nominations "Feud: Capote vs. the Swans" gets for the 2024 Emmys will be a good indicator of how much of a contender that show (which seems built for the category) is in the Limited Series categories overall. It was only two years ago when five out of the seven nomination slots were taken up by actresses from "The White Lotus," with star Jennifer Coolidge winning. Plus this group of swans, featuring everyone from Diane Lane to Chloë Sevigny to Demi Moore, already comes with years of awards consideration.
It does feel inevitable that less shows will be represented in the supporting categories, just because multiple limited series have strong ensembles, but the Supporting Actress race especially has Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau of "Baby Reindeer," and Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone of "Under the Bridge" in the mix, two pairs who would make sense both being nominated, as their performances really build off of each other. The same can't quite be said for Kali Reis and Fiona Shaw in "True Detective: Night Country," but the former, who worked more opposite lead Jodie Foster, is at the very least a frontrunner for the nomination.
All the said, there are still a myriad of contenders that have been singled out as the supporting performance to watch on their shows, be it Dakota Fanning in "Ripley," Aja Naomi King in "Lessons in Chemistry," Sarayu Blue in "Expats," Sandra Oh in "The Sympathizer," or Allison Williams in "Fellow Travelers."

Last Year's Winner: Niecy Nash-Betts, "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story"
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Of course, it is the performances that win this Emmy, not the network. That said, Netflix has a solid chance of winning the category a second year in a row given the huge response "Baby Reindeer" has gotten after quietly premiering on the platform in April.
Notable Ineligible Series: Tiffany Boone, "The Big Cigar" (the season will not air in time to be eligible); Cleopatra Coleman and Jacki Weaver, "Clipped" (the season will not air in time to be eligible); Ruth Negga and Lily Rabe, "Presumed Innocent" (the season will not air in time to be eligible)
