Shaken Scotland aiming for redemption against Swiss, says goalkeeper Gunn

COLOGNE, Germany - Scotland are still hurting after their 5-1 thrashing by Germany in the opening game of Euro 2024 last Friday and they will be aiming to make it up to their army of travelling fans against Switzerland on Wednesday, goalkeeper Angus Gunn said.

The Scots went behind in the 10th minute and were outclassed for the entire 90 minutes. They did not manage a single shot, on or off target, in their Group A clash, with their goal coming from the head of German defender Antonio Rudiger.

"We let ourselves down, our families down and obviously the fans, which is probably the most difficult to take," Gunn said in an interview published on the Scottish team's X account on Monday.

"It's down to us to bounce back now, and the good thing is that we've two more games to put it right, and we can still reach our target."

They now face a Swiss side who had a resounding 3-1 win over Hungary in their opening game, and Gunn said that the mood in the camp was positive, not least thanks to the strong support shown by Scotland's fans in the wake of the Germany defeat.

"We know what we have to do in terms of trying to get out of the group. Obviously they (the Swiss) got a very positive result in their first game as well, so it's going to be difficult, but form our point of view it's pretty straightforward," Gunn said.

"You look back at how far we've come, how well we've done to qualify, and you have to take belief from that ... we've got to target two wins that can get us through the group, and if we can do that, we've reached our target."

The Scots take on the Swiss on Wednesday in Cologne, with Germany taking on Hungary earlier in the day. REUTERS
