Woman Hilariously Explains Why Pronouncing Popular Italian Appetizer Correctly Is a Must

Americans have an unfortunate reputation for struggling with the pronunciation of the romance languages. Even though our efforts may be well-intentioned, our delivery often misses the mark. The first time I traveled to Italy, I knew it was true when the Italians started speaking to me in English to prevent me from butchering their language.
While there are many words I can now say correctly, I Americanize plenty of things, which my Italian friends point out to me quickly. Fortunately, I’ve been saying this appetizer correctly, and after hearing this explanation, I know you’ll never want to say it wrong again, either.
Listen to the right way to say it and the reason it matters in a video shared on June 11:
This is very interesting. Giana (@gianacarli) makes it hard for us to feel okay about mispronouncing Bruschetta again. Undoubtedly, Italians everywhere will rejoice when they no longer have to hear us ordering this staple using the wrong word. She tells us that when we order this tomato-topped toast, we want to request “Bru-SKett-A,” not “Bru-SHett-A.” Although there may have been a Mr. Buscetta (which sounds almost like Bru-shetta), he’s not a guy we want to be associated with. That’s because Mr. B was a part of the mafia and became a snitch. He was one of the first to say out loud what the mob was doing in Palermo. As you might imagine, this did not go over well with those in the Family, who had a profitable business trafficking cocaine. The consequence of being a rat was the mafia killed his entire Buscetta family, leaving him alive to suffer the pain of their loss. Yikes!
People in the audience were familiar with this story. Viewer @iosonofillo revealed, “There is also a great movie about his life called The Traitor.” It would be interesting to know more about him and this period of time.
How to Make Authentic Bruschetta
If hearing this word has increased your appetite, you can easily prepare this delectable dish at home. It’s even better if you have fresh tomatoes from the garden.
- Slice the baguette and brush the pieces on both sides with olive oil. Then, toast them in the oven until they are golden brown.
- Chop Roma tomatoes into bite-size pieces and toss them with salt, garlic, olive oil, and basil.
- Just before serving, spoon the tomato mixture onto the round of toast.
Although this appetizer and this man’s name may be one letter off, it still reinforces the point of saying it correctly. As this mispronunciation is a pet peeve of many Italians, it may just help us make more friends.
