Germany vs. Scotland live score, result, updates as Musiala dazzles, Euro 2024 hosts lead 10-man Scots 3-0

Germany made an emphatic start to Euro 2024 as they raced into a 3-0 halftime lead against 10-man Scotland in Munich

The tournament hosts made an aggressive start after the Allianz Arena paid tribute to the late Franz Beckenbauer and Steve Clarke's side, who beat Spain during qualification, quickly found themselves overwhelmed.

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz clipped a shot into the bottom left corner from Joshua Kimmich's 10th-minute pass before Musiala rifled past Angus Gunn following fine work from Ilkay Gundogan and Kai Havertz.

The latter two were involved as Scotland's evening took another dire turn on the stroke of the interval. Gunn did well to keep out a Gundogan header and when the Barcelona midfielder sought to convert the rebound Ryan Porteous clattered into him two-footed.

A VAR review resulting in a penalty and a red card was the only viable outcome. With Gundogan hobbling, Havertz stepped up to dispatch the spot kick.

Germany vs. Scotland live updates, highlights from Euro 2024

68th minute: GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!Niclas Fullkurg!!!!

Sane raids down the left and links with Gundogan. Fullkrug has a bouncing ball just inside the area and emphatically clatters home his 12th goal in 17 international appearances. Wallop!

67th minute: Gilmour on for McGregor, presumably to close the door of an empty stable.

66th minute: Kroos's corner from the right skims out to the edge of the box. Mittlestadt goes for a champagne finish and why not? But it flies way over.

64th minute: Sane right into the action, takes his shot early but doesn't really get hold of it. Nevertheless, another ominous sign.

63rd minute: Tah in late on Christie and is booked. Now a double change that might force a few more Scots behind the sofa. On come Sane and Fullkrug for Wirtz and Havertz.

60th minute: Germany popping the ball around deliciously at the moment. They look exactly like a team of high-class players with an elite coach. Wirtz fires over from range.

59th minute: McGregor hurls himself in the way to block a Gundogan shot after Musiala once again causes havoc. A fourth goal feels imminent.

58th minute: Musiala gets his dancing feet going again. Scotland cannot live with him at all. The Bayern star sets the ball back to Mittelstadt, whose cross is fired over on the half-volley by Wirtz at the back post. He probably should have done better there.

57th minute: Germany work their latest corner short. Gross takes aim from outside the box and the shot is closed down.

51st minute: Rugier takes aim from distance. His shot bounces awkwardly and Gunn had to readjust to push it around the post.

47th minute: McGinn with the opportunity to aim a free-kick into the Germany box from the left but he can't clear the first man.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We're back underway and there's a change apiece. Andrich, on a yellow, makes way for Gross, while Hanley comes on to try and shore up the Scotland defence in place of lone-striker Adams.

Halftime

Christie has the final touch of the half and welts the ball away in frustration, probably summing up the feelings of a nation. Some observers tipped Scotland to capitalise upon first-night nerves from the hosts but Germany have been electric and this could turn into a complete humiliation.

45th minute+1: GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Kai Havertz (pen)!!!!!!

Havertz staggers his run, lets Gunn move first and pops his penalty in the other direction. Three and easy.

44th minute: PENALTY TO GERMANY AND RED CARD TO RYAN PORTEOUS! In truth, once referee Clement Turpin saw the images he had no choice. Porteous clattered into Gundogan two-footed. He has to go. That was an ugly leg-breaker of a challenge.

42nd minute: Almost 3-0! Balletic dribble from Musiala, who finds Gundogan. The Barcelona midfielder pops the ball off to Kimmich and continues his run to head goalwards. Gunn makes a fine save. In the scramble afterwards, Porteous clattered into Gundogan. VAR will check for a penalty to Germany.

38th minute: Adams makes his presence felt and wins a free-kick about 40 yards from goal. Scotland will take the chance to get something into the Germany box. The hosts clear.

36th minute: Scotland get one launched towards Adams. It comes to nought but at least they have Germany in their own half for a few moments.

31st minute: Andrich flies into slide tackle on McTominay. He gets some of the ball but there's excessive force at play and that's not his first. The first yellow card of Euro 2024 is his, though.

27th minute: The ball is set back to Havertz, who get his effort through the wall but it's a routine save for Gunn.

26th minute: NO PENALTY! Replays show the contact took place just outside the area.

24th minute: Penalty to Germany! My word, this is unravelling at some pace for Scotland. Tierney and Christie each flew into Musiala but it might have been outside the box. This will be reviewed.

19th minute: GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Jamal Musiala

Gundogan spins into space in that irresistible way he does on the half turn and slides a pass through to Havertz. The Arsenal man holds up play and sets up Musiala to rift an unstoppable shot high into the net. Nothing Gunn could have done about that one.

15th minute: Scotland have steadied themselves fairly well since going behind but they're struggling to get any sort of foothold in possession. Clarke's decision to omit Gilmour was a talking point before kickoff and it will remain one if the game continues to unfold in this manner.

10th minute: GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Florian Wirtz!!!!!

Liftoff for Germany and it's the star of Bayer Leverkusen's incredible season who gets the goal. Kimmich enjoys far too much room to find Wirtz on the edge of the area. He clips into the bottom left corner via a fairly substantial hand from Gunn.

6th minute: A chance for Scotland to attack and Tierney opts for the long throw. Rudiger heads clear unfussily and Havertz takes a whack from Ralston as Germany try to break.

4th minute: Musiala sent scampering down the right but Tierney sticks to his task and wins the goal kick, along with an arm around the shoulder and thump on the chest from Robertson.

1st minute: Gunn straight into action in the Scotland goal as he comes out to deny Wirtz. The offside flag went up after the Leverkusen star collected Rudiger's raking pass but that's an early warning sign.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Germany get us underway, pump the ball in the direction of the Scottish defence. McGregor manages to hack clear.

2 mins before kickoff: Talking of stirring stuff, what a pair of anthems! Two spine-tingling renditions and we're ready to rock'n'roll.

5 mins before kickoff: A really lovely moment before the teams come out as Germany's respective 1980 and 1996 European Championship-winning captains flank Franz Beckenbauer's widow Heidi onto the field with the Henri Delaunay Trophy. There is then a video tribute to Der Kaizer on the stadium screens. Stirring stuff.

10 mins before kickoff: I guess this is fine as it goes. The sort of standard sub-David Guetta fayre you get for these occasions nowadays. It certainly lacks the gravitas of Andrea Bocelli in Rome three years ago, or the star power of Lenny Kravitz at the Champions League final the other week. Anyway, nearly time for some football.

15 mins before kickoff: Germany might be at home here but the 200,000-strong Scottish takeover of Munich has been well documented. There are plenty of them in the ground now. They might be split by a woman in Celtic colours who is part of the dance troop getting the opening ceremony underway, mind.

20 mins before kickoff: Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho are sitting next to each other in the stands shooting the breeze. Both big Le Shuuk fans, as I understand.

40 mins before kickoff: The glitz of the tournament opening ceremony will be getting underway at the Allianz Arena shortly. There will be a poignant tribute to the late, great Franz Beckenbauer, along with the various musical stylings of Robin Schulz, Le Shuuk, Topic and Leony.

55 mins before kickoff: This is the Scotland XI. Che Adams gets the nod at centre-forward ahead of Lawrence Shankland. Billy Gilmour has to be content with a place on the bench.

1 hour before kickoff: The teams are in and this is how Germany line up, with Havertz in . He'll be supported by Jamal Musiala, Ilkay Gundogan and Florian Wirtz. Which is, you know, useful.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Germany would certainly be happy to take the opening game of Euro 2020 as a template for tonight. Italy strode out at Rome's Stadio Olimpico and swept Turkey aside 3-0, the Azzurri's first step on the road to going all the way.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: Confirmed team news will be with us shortly. It's been some season for Kai Havertz. The former Chelsea attacker struggled initially after moving to Arsenal and featured, bizarrely, as an experimental left wing-back for Nagelsmann in the national team. However, Havertz established himself as Mikel Arteta's first central attacker, scoring several heavy goals as the Gunners pushed Manchester City all the way to the wire in the Premier League title race. He is favourite to get the nod over Niclas Fullkrug at centre-forward tonight.

2 hours before kickoff: Remember that 1998 World Cup outing we mentioned a little earlier? Well that remained Scotland's last successful bid to qualify for a major tournament until Euro 2020. Steve Clarke helmed that qualification bid and has overseen a renaissance after a couple of decades in the international wilderness. Scotland are outsiders tonight and will do well to emerge from a group featuring talented Switzerland and Hungary sides. But a midfield boasting the talents of Scott McTominay, John McGinn and Billy Gilmour means they should be able to hold their own and give the estimated 200,000 travelling and something to shout about.

2 hrs 20 mins before kickoff: Germany's recent major tournament record has been wretched to an extent that is unprecedented in their history. Group-stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups sandwiched an underwhelming Euro 2020, where England knocked them out in the last 16. But Julian Nagelsmann is bullish about the prospects of a talent-stacked squad that will enjoy the backing of home support.

“I look in our players’ eyes and see the belief and will to win," the former Bayern Munich head coach said at a pre-match news conference. "I want us to believe in ourselves. We have great players, good togetherness, home advantage, we’ve had great training sessions and a good mentality. We have everything. We just have to show it tomorrow, and that’s why belief is very important.”

Julian Nagelsmann Bayern Munich 2021-22

2 hrs 40 mins before kickoff: This game has faint echoes of a tournament opener from a little over a quarter of a century ago. At the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, Scotland were thrust into the opening game against one of the most successful football nations of all time. Cesar Sampaio headed Brazil into an early lead at the Stade de France before conceding the penalty that allowed John Collins to level. The Tartan Army looked to be battling their way to a famous point against he reigning champions before Cafu bustled into the box and forced an own-goal from Tom Boyd.

3 hours before kickoff: The finishing touches were applied in yesterday's training session and we are finally ready for the 2024 European Championship to get underway. Before that, we'll have the opening ceremony here in Munich.
