Supermarkets urgently recall sandwiches, wraps and salad over E.coli breakout

Major supermarkets in the UK are urgently recalling a selection of sandwiches, wraps and salads over E.coli fears.

Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Co-op and Boots are among the stores warning customers not to eat some of the pre-packed products made by Greencore Group.

Hundreds of people across the country fell ill after an E.coli outbreak last week, with at least 67 of those admitted to hospital, according to the UK Health Security Agency.

Greencore Group recalled 45 different items as a ‘precautionary measure’ due to possible contamination with the bacteria.

Darren Whitby, head of incidents at the Food Standards Agency, said: ‘Sandwich manufacturers are taking a precautionary measure to recall various sandwiches wraps and salads in response to findings from investigations by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), who are working to identify the cause of an ongoing outbreak caused by shiga toxin-producing E.coli (Stec).’

E. coli are a diverse group of bacteria that are normally harmless and live in the intestines of humans and animals.

However some strains, like Stec, can make people very ill.

The FSA advises any consumers who have any of the products being recalled not to eat them.

These are the products being recalled by each supermarket. The affected items have a use by date of June 16 or earlier, unless otherwise stated.

Earlier this week, Morrisons recalled one of its chicken products over fears it could contain metal, while Aldi declared a popular BBQ item ‘unsafe to eat’ and pulled it from its shelves.
