1-on-1 with Martin Truex Jr.: ‘Hopefully we can go out on top’
Alex, we were here in the Media Center at Iowa Speedway and it is official. Martin Tricks Junior is retiring after the season from full time NASCAR Cup Series racing. I'm going to make sure to say that a point first and foremost, congratulations and 2nd why now? Thanks. I just felt felt like the right time. You know, I don't have like 1 crazy reason, one big reason it's it's something I thought about, you know, over the last couple years. How long how long do I want to keep doing this and. I'm just ready to go have some Sundays off, to be honest with you. It's, it's been a long time. So very thankful for every, you know, everyone and, and all the support from the fans over the years and just, you know, all of our partners and. Race teams and crew members and owners, I just, you name it, across the board, it's, it's been a heck of a ride and you know. Accomplished a lot more than I ever thought, than I ever dreamed of honestly. And it's been, it's been amazing. So hopefully we can go out on top, go win some more races this year and be pretty awesome, get a championship and walk off. Well, I'm going to ask it for all the 19 fans, for all the Truex fans that have followed you throughout your whole entire career. You said in your press conference that it was just full time racing. You're stepping away from what is the future? What is 2025? Are you going to give us more on track opportunities? Yeah, I mean, I definitely still want to do some racing. I just don't know, you know, what it's going to look like or, or you know what I'll be running or where I'll be running or whatever. I've already talked to coach about wanting to run some Xfinity races or something. So I don't know, just ready to go have some fun and do something with a little less commitment and pressure. Finally, we look forward to celebrating you throughout the rest of the season and then seeing your final race at Phoenix. But what does this team do? How do you go out on top, like you said, and win a championship this year? Yeah, well, I mean, we've got all the ingredients, we've got the tools, certainly have the speed and you know, it's been a year of near misses. I would say we just need to just turn that a little bit and and take advantage of these races where we're, you know, leading laps and and being up front. So teams doing a great job. And we just got to clean up a few little things and, you know, hopefully give a little look on her side as well. Go a long way. Well, thank you for letting us be a part of your career and we look forward to the rest of the season. I appreciate that.
