The Los Angeles Chargers have undergone a significant transformation this offseason, especially in their wide receiver corps. With longtime targets Keenan Allen and Mike Williams now on different teams, quarterback Justin Herbert is adapting to a new-look WR room that holds promise for the future.
Allen was traded to the Chicago Bears, and Williams signed with the New York Jets after being released by the Chargers. Reflecting on the departure of these two key players, Herbert expressed his appreciation and the challenge of moving forward without them.
"They are two of the best to ever do it. Two great teammates, friends, competitors. It's tough to replace guys like that because there's not many like them," Herbert shared. Despite the loss, Herbert remains optimistic about the talent in the current lineup. "But I feel comfortable with the group we have here that have stepped up and done a great job picking up this offense and going out there and competing."
Herbert's confidence extends beyond just their on-field capabilities. He praised the new group’s dedication to practice and preparation. "I know we don't have pads on or anything but I love the day they attack the day of practice, weights, tape, film," Herbert continued. "That receiver group is special and I'm looking forward to throwing them the ball."
While it’s clear he misses Allen and Williams, Herbert remains supportive of their new journeys. "Obviously, tough losing two friends like Mike and Keenan," Herbert added. "But I wish them the absolute best. No matter where they go, I'll always be a fan of them."
The current Chargers’ receiving group includes returning players like Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston, and Derius Davis. The team has also bolstered their lineup with free agent DJ Chark and drafted three wide receivers, with Ladd McConkey leading the pack as a second-round pick.
Herbert is impressed with how quickly the new additions have integrated into the team. "You could guess that it would be difficult, but it hasn't been at all. These guys have picked up everything, even the draft picks," Herbert said. He specifically highlighted McConkey, the No. 34 overall pick from Georgia, who has quickly developed a strong connection with Herbert during spring practices.
"He's just picked up the offense so easily, it's like he's been a four or five-year vet," Herbert said about McConkey. "He understands the game, understands leverages, a smart player. And he's very athletic. He's one of those guys who is able to beat man coverage and finds the soft spot in zones," Herbert added. "I'm really looking forward to getting him the ball."
Herbert also spoke highly of Quentin Johnston, a first-round pick from 2023, who is poised to make significant strides in his second year. "He's been incredible," Herbert noted. "He's one of those guys that I'm going to get the ball to as much as possible."
As the Chargers prepare for the upcoming season, Herbert’s enthusiasm for his new receiving corps is evident. Despite the departure of Allen and Williams, the quarterback is optimistic about the future and eager to see how the revamped WR room will perform.
