Jewish USC students host their own graduation after weeks of rampant pro-Palestine protests banned the school's main ceremony

After the University of Southern California canceled its main stage commencement ceremony, Jewish students held their own graduation event including a celebrity guest speaker.

The university canceled its main commencement following days of unrest on the campus from chaotic protests about the ongoing Israeli-Hamas war, ostensibly as a result of the extra time needed to process the large number of guests coming to campus who will be subjected to increased safety measures.

USC's valedictorian, Asna Tabassum, was been banned from making a speech during the university's commencement ceremony after she allegedly made anti-Semitic posts on social media calling for the 'complete abolition' of Israel.

USC Hillel organized its own graduation ceremony for over 50 students and their families on Friday, ahead of the smaller stage commencements taking place across the university.

'A lot of people have been trying to take these joyful moments away from us. We get to come together as a community in a safe environment, in a healing environment — something the university wasn't able to provide,' master's degree graduate Mark Rayant told the Los Angeles Times.

Over 50 students wearing black robes and red sashes and nearly 200 guests gathered at USC’s campus Hillel center for the event, while private security guards watched over the event.

Guest speaker Mayim Bialik, actress and former 'Jeopardy!' host, addressed students by video.

'What a four years you've had,' she said. 'This past year in particular has been a real challenge, but this is life. This is your life.'

'You've had to shine brighter than you'd thought you'd have to … and you've had to be engaged leaders and defenders.'

Executive director of USC Hillel Dave Cohen told The Times the school year ended under a 'very, very dark cloud.'

'No matter how you view these issues — as a person of Jewish identity or as a person in general — there's no denying this depleted and depressed the atmosphere,' Cohn said.

Hillel International highlight the graduation ceremony on their Instagram, sharing photos of the ceremony and the new graduates.

'When USC canceled its main-stage commencement ceremony, USC Hillel stepped up to support Jewish students. 50+ graduating Jewish students were recognized during a well-deserved graduation ceremony, along with 200 family members, friends, professors, and classmates,' the organization said.

'No matter what is happening in the world and on campus, Hillel will ALWAYS put their students first. Mazel Tov to the class of 2024, we can’t wait to see all the amazing things you do!'

Pro-Palestine protests continued at commencement ceremonies across the country, despite many being canceled in the wake of weeks of clashes between pro-Palestine protestors, administrators and law enforcement.

As a livestream of the event rolled, she turned to the crowd and ripped up her diploma.

Dozens of students stormed out of Duke University's commencement ceremony in protest over guest speaker Jerry Seinfeld who has supported Israel since the Oct 7 atrocity by Hamas and throughout the war in Gaza.

The comedian, 70, was met with a mix of cheers and boos as he was introduced before students carrying flags and chanting 'free, free Palestine' marched out of the Wallace Wade Stadium on Sunday.

As a wave of antiwar protests grip universities across America a flyer distributed on campus before the ceremony said: 'When you see students walking out, follow them,' WRAL reported.

Other graduates shouted 'Jerry! Jerry!' as the actor received an honorary degree and went on to deliver his speech without any further major interruptions.
