OpenAI Unveils Voice Features for ChatGPT, New Tools for Free Users

microsoft, openai unveils voice features for chatgpt, new tools for free users

OpenAI said Monday that it is releasing an updated artificial intelligence model called ChatGPT-4o, plus a desktop version of its software.

The company, which is backed by Microsoft, said it would be making the new version available to all of its users. It will provide capabilities to everyone that were previously only available to paying users, plus upgrades disclosed at the event.

GPT-4o is faster than the previous model, with improvements in audio, text, and visual. “This is the first time that we are really making a huge step forward when it comes to the ease of use,” said Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati.

The company spent much of its announcement showing off new voice features built into ChatGPT. The software will be able to have humanlike conversations with its users. It can solve complex problems like fixing broken computer code or providing language translation in real time.

Users will also be able to share a live camera view with the chatbot, which can then respond to what it sees. During the event, an OpenAI presenter offered a selfie view to ChatGPT, which responded with an analysis about his smile and his sense of excitement.

All of the updates, including the desktop version, are expected to become available for users in the coming weeks.

As expected, the company didn’t offer any news about whether it might launch a search engine. While Reuters reported on Friday that the company, backed by Microsoft, was planning to unveil an AI-powered search product at the event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman went to X on Friday to put that idea to rest.

Macquarie Equity Research analyst Frederick Havemeyer wrote in a research note Monday that “we think OpenAI moving into search is a matter of when, not if.” That would lead to direct competition with Alphabet’s Google, which has also been using its own AI models.

There also was no news about a potential partnership with Apple following reports that the companies are completing terms for an agreement that would allow the personal-tech company to use ChatGPT features in iOS 18 for the iPhone.

OpenAI didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
