Asbestos alert issued after tornado strikes WA's Bunbury
When the tornado struck A Bunbury, it took locals by surprise. This couple's living room destroyed right as we were about to go into the lounge room. Or he was. Yes, the roof caved in, but they say they're lucky to be alive. They do recognise that if I'd gone out a couple seconds earlier, I very well could have been done there. That ceiling. I have not stopped crying since 2 bags of clothes and their pets is all they've been able to retrieve from their damaged property. Now we put all of our money into making this. Home for us and all of our love and justice now it's kind of just under rubble. They are one of many families impacted. Several homes are uninhabitable. We've had about around about 100 homes impacted, 7 severely and seven are uninhabitable. This weather event is absolutely extreme. The state government has made thousands of dollars available for locals whose homes were damaged. But now there's a new emerging problem. They're being turned away at roadblocks because of concerns about asbestos from damaged buildings. I spent maybe an hour and a half driving around with all the road closures, asking any personnel that I could find, firefighters, even if I can get to my house and I was turned away. Queen Armstrong hasn't been able to go home since yesterday. I've been house hopping from my friends and family, trying to just find somewhere to sleep. There's a lot more people that I know, neighbours, friends that have been turned away to maybe hotels out of pocket. I've got a friend up and having to go up to Perth because she's got nowhere to go with dogs or anything. It's unclear how long residents will be kept from their houses. Authorities say they'll be let in only when it's safe.
