Baldinger on Broncos OTAs: Bo Nix's ability to succeed in Sean Payton's offense requires refined footwork
Speaking of Sean Payton, how do you, if you're him and you know how complex your offensive system can get and has gotten in the past, how do you adjust that to Bonex a young guy? Well, I mean, you can't give them Drew Brees's playbook. And I know Sean Payton isn't doing that's just too much to expect. But there's a couple things when when you really study Drew Brees that I'm sure Sean Payton is looking at and all these quarterbacks. And you know, during Drew Brees's career under Sean Payton, he led the league in completion percentage six different times. And so one of the things that you look for when you saw Drew play was when he went through his progressions. His footwork was amazing. And if I was out there watching OTASI would be watching Bo Nix, Zach Wilson, I'd be watching a footwork. Because that's going to tell you if they're going to be accurate, a chance to be accurate when they get to that second or the third read, a lot of guys can go through the progressions, but they don't move their feet and then they throw wildly when they get to that third. This, this is something that I would be looking at and I'm sure Sean is coaching him up on that. When they go through and they go right to left and they go wherever it is like get your feet moving, get your feet set, be in a position to throw it. The little things that really matter at this time of the year, Judy. Yeah, I mean, Sean Payton historically has not really used rookie quarterbacks. So this is a different thing. I mean, to me, the Denver Broncos entire season is about developing bow Knicks. I mean, they took him in the first round. They have to know if he is the guy going forward. Sean Payton called his quarterback room, you know, a bunch of orphan dogs and that's really funny, but it but it's true. It's just not a great quarterback room. So if if you're going to invest all this time and energy, you've got to invest it in Bo Nix bringing him along. Getting him ready, he's got to play. You've got to know if he is the guy going forward for a number of seasons. I don't think there are many expectations that the Denver Broncos are going to compete with the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West. So to me, this is a rebuilding season. This is a season to try to build Bone Nicks up and see what you've got going forward. Whether it's Bo Nix or Garrett Stidham or Zach Wilson, you'd like those guys to start being able to throw to Courtland Sutton, the wide receiver who has been away from OTAs in the spring. He was not mentioned earlier in this segment here because they still got another week before the mandatory stuff. The Broncos are part of that later cluster. That is doing a mandatory mini camp in the week that is following next. I think you'll see him at some point in the near future here. He wants a little bit of a bump at the very least on his contract and when it gets to training camp one way or another, I am sure that he is going to wind up being there. An important piece for the Broncos. We certainly saw that last year with his 10 touchdown reception.
