Status Yellow weather warning issued for three counties as downpour approaches

The national forecaster is warning that localised flooding is possible, with up to 40mm of rainfall expected tomorrow

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rain warning for three counties, with localised flooding expected in some areas overnight and into tomorrow afternoon.

The warning comes into effect from 1am on Monday, covering counties Cork, Kerry and Waterford, and will remain in place until 12pm on Monday.

It brings to an end a spell of sunny, warm weather across the country, and is likely to be the beginning of unsettled conditions over the coming days.

The national forecaster is warning that localised flooding is possible, with up to 40mm of rainfall expected tomorrow. Difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility can also be expected.

A weather warning will also come into force in the north, where Antrim, Armagh, Tyrone, Derry and Down will be subject to a yellow rain advisory from 12pm tomorrow until 6am on Tuesday.

Some sunny spells are likely to punctuate showers on Tuesday with the most persistent rain in the north and in Munster. Mixed conditions will continue on Wednesday, with temperatures climbing between 16 and 20 degrees.

Sunshine and thundery showers are currently forecast for Thursday, along with possible spot flooding as a result of heavy rain in some places. Maximum temperatures could hit 21 degrees, but will be a little cooler in coastal areas.

Here’s the latest outlook for the coming days from Met Éireann:

Monday night

Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue across the north and east for a time on Monday night. Elsewhere, there will be long clear spells and just a few showers, mainly near the south coast. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees with light easterly winds.

Tuesday

There'll be rain or showers at times on Tuesday with some sunny spells also. At present, the most persistent rain is expected to affect parts of north Ulster and also south Munster but details are likely to change over the coming days. Maximum temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in moderate easterly winds. Drier conditions developing in many regions overnight with clear spells and just well scattered showers. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in light easterly breezes.

Wednesday

It looks set to be a day of sunshine and showers on Wednesday with the chance of the odd heavy downpour. Maximum temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees, warmest across the west in light easterly breezes. Dry and mostly clear overnight with areas of mist and fog forming in light winds or calm conditions. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees.

Thursday

Another day of sunshine and showers on Thursday. Some of the showers are likely to be heavy and thundery with the potential for some spot flooding. Maximum temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees but a little cooler at the coast as sea breezes develop.
