brit gran's terrifying 4-word message to family while being held 'hostage' in turkey hospital

A family have told how their seriously ill mum is being held "hostage" at a Turkish hospital until her medical bills are paid.

Fiona McCusker-Rae, 52, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, became unwell during a trip on her own to Antalya as she tried to get over the loss of her own mother Olive and was eventually found in a blood-soaked state in her hotel room.

Her son Cody, 25, told how she had been writing in pain but unable to contact hotel staff and called her daughter to say: "I'm covered in blood." The family also tried to get into contact with the hotel without success and so eventually after having to deal with the British Embassy, Fiona was taken from the hotel to a hospital.

"My sister was on FaceTime to my mum the whole time. When the staff got to her she was covered in blood," Cody revealed. Fiona was swiftly taken to Antalya Life Private Hospital and immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Cody was told to fly to Turkey as his mum's condition was 'extremely serious' and after flying out on Friday, May 24, he was only permitted a two-minute conversation with his mum. "She was conscious and able to speak when I visited her," he said. "'She said: 'I told you not to come over', and she said it was going to be alright. I think she was just trying to reassure me. The next day I visited her she was unable to talk or move and she was on oxygen. She wasn't with it at all."

Fiona was diagnosed with gastrointestinal haemorrhaging, cirrhosis of the liver and sepsis. He was told that she had a good chance of 'going either way'. "She could die or she could get better," Cody told the Manchester Evening News.

He added that her holiday insurance has said they are 99% not likely to pay out as she didn't disclose her condition, which had arisen from the fact she is a recovering alcoholic. She is now undergoing treatment, which has not been discussed with the family, Cody said.

"The hospital said that unless she is medically repatriated with a team of doctors and nurses, she will not be allowed to leave unless she foots the medical bills," he continued. "She will be held here, it's like she's being held hostage. I can only see her for five minutes, once a day, at visiting time. The hospital also hasn't given us a price, even though we've asked numerous times."

Cody said he plans to fly home to the UK on Friday before coming back to Turkey the following week. "It's just a waiting game," he said. "It's just the unknown, we don't know what they are doing, they're not telling us what medication she's been given.

"It's just stressful - we want to get her home and get her treatment in the UK. It's scary, we don't know what's going on. I've never seen my mum in that state before. We're in a constant state of worry and anxiety."

The cost for medically repatriating someone from Antalya, Turkey to Manchester can range considerably, anywhere between £20,000 to £50,000, and the family have set up a GoFundMe page to help cope with these costs. Cody added: "We just want to get her home. I just want her in the UK so we can see she is being looked after properly."
